Harriet Tubman's language and heart

These poems, by the previously unknown to me writer Quaraysh Ali Lansana, are a skillful and vivid reconstruction of this important woman in American history. He uses the black "dialect" of the time with dignity and empathy. The portrait of Harriet Tubman, known to John Brown as "The General," (apparently Brown always referred to Harriet as "he"), is heartbreaking. And redemptive. Inspiring.

Brilliant work from a brilliant mind!

In my Intro to Creative Writing class, Mr. Lansana's They Shall Run has been our focus for the first 8 weeks. I didn't really know what to expect or if I would even enjoy it, but it didn't take long to fall in love with this wonderful piece of art.
The book takes on the many different perspectives of the Underground Railroad and it does so brilliantly. To truly love and understand these poems, one needs to hear them read the way the poet intended, in slave dialect and with all the proper breaks. I was fortunate enough to watch Mr. Lansana's perform last night at my university and it made the poems come alive for me.
Well done. I purchased two additional books from Mr. Lansana at the reading, one was his own work titled: Reluctant Minivan. The other he edited as well as had work in, titled: The Breakbeat Poets. Definitely worth the read.
