It takes 8 gallons of water to grow a tomato; 616 gallons to make a burger patty. In fact, the food each of us consumes per day represents an investment of 4,500 gallons of water, according to the California Farm Bureau. In this densely populated state where it rains only six months out of the year, where does all that water come from? This thoroughly engaging, concise book tells the story of California's most precious resource, tracing the journey of water in the state from the atmosphere to the snowpack to our faucets and foods. Along the way, we learn much about California itself as the book describes its rivers, lakes, wetlands, dams, and aqueducts and discusses the role of water in agriculture, the environment, and politics. Essential reading for a state facing the future with an already overextended water supply, this fascinating book shows that, for all Californians, every drop counts.
* Features 137 color photographs and 27 color maps
* Includes a table "Where Does Your Water Come From?" that answers the question for 315 California cities and towns
* Provides up-to-date information on water quality in California, covering such timely topics as Giardia, groundwater contamination, fluoride, and the bottled-water phenomenon
A book in the Californians and Their Environment subseries, dedicated to understanding human influences on the state's ecology and natural resources

apropos to current "drought" in California
By bowonwing
pages 26-27:
"Age dating of tree stumps that are now submerged in lakes and rivers has identified two epic droughts periods in California during the Middle Ages. Stumps at Mono Lake, Lake Tenaya and Walker River show two medieval droughts, one lasting 140 years and the other at least 100 years. The twentieth century was not 'normal' when compared to this longer record; it was, in fact, California's third- or fourth-wettest century of the past 4,000 years. Scott Stine, in his report on this research, noted, 'Since statehood, Californians have been living the the best of climatic times. And we've taken advantage of these best of times by building the most colossal urban and agricultural infrastructure in the entire world, all dependent on huge amounts of water, and all based on the assumption that runoff from the Sierra Nevada will continue as it has during the past 150 years.' Water is such an important resouce in California- great review of this
By laura miller
What better time than in a deep drought to read this book. This book thoroughly documents the cycles of water, as it is experienced throughout California. It also documents how this water was and is captured and distributed. Also presented are the projections of population growth, agricultural expectations, and how these demands can potentially be met. It is an excellent overview of this very precious resource that we often take for granted.

How does the water get to your tap?
By Daniel D.
This book is a concise, factual, and unbiased description of California's water supply system as it is today. Rather, how it was when the book was published (2009). Particularly helpful are the maps and photos, which help the reader picture what the system components look like and where they are located. There is more to the story of water in California and there are a number of books covering that topic.
