This Civil War novel starts off at a clip and sustains its fast pace. The 12-year-old narrator, Susanna Simons, has been brought up to be ladylike and yet also to aspire to become a doctor, like her widower father. When Dr. Simons heeds an urgent call to tend wounded Confederate soldiers, Susanna is left to command the family's South Carolina island plantation and look after her two younger brothers?until Yankees seal off the island and all the slaves and neighboring families flee. Susanna and her brothers, escaping in a flatbed boat, are rescued from raging waters by the fleeing Elias, one of her father's most trusted slaves. Torn between feeling betrayed by Elias's flight and her dawning understanding of his desire for freedom, Susanna and her brothers begin to question slavery, their values and their way of life. The adventures continue, taking readers to the Simonses' Charleston mansion and through the razing of that city, and then on Susanna and her brothers' dangerous journey to find their father. The novel's tribute to extinct Southern gentility can seem artificial as well as sentimental, but readers will revel in the three protagonists' bravery and spirit. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-7-Twelve-year-old Susanna Simons's father leaves her in charge of her two brothers and their Sea Island plantation while he travels on a mission for General Lee. He will tour Confederate hospitals with an eye to improving conditions and, Dr. Simons confides to his daughter, do some spying. When the Yankees invade Port Royal, everyone, including the neighbor who was supposed to look in on the children, flees the island. Stopping to doctor an injured runaway slave, the siblings miss the last ferry. After they make their way to Charleston on a flatboat with the aid of one of their escaped slaves, they ask their acquaintances for help but are turned away. Alone in the family town house, the children struggle to survive worsening conditions and desperately seek news of their father. The evening Susanna attends her first dance, a cooking fire destroys their home. Truly desperate now, she decides to strike out across the country in search of her father. There is plenty of action here, but some of the plot elements are not well strung together. Dialogue seems forced at times, motivations for some characters remain pretty foggy, and the evils of slavery are treated rather superficially. Still, there is a lot of Southern flavor and charm. Details of daily life are interesting, and Susanna is courageous and winning. Love's Dakota Spring (Holiday, 1995) is a more masterful period story of children who have lost a parent.

From Kirkus Reviews
In an absorbing historical novel from Love (My Lone Star Summer, 1996, etc.), three children flee their South Carolina Sea Island plantation, hoping to find their father, who is off spying for General Lee. Neglected by the neighbors who were supposed to care for them, the three Simon children quickly discover that they're not up to managing on their own; when all the slaves disappear, Susanna, 12, and her younger brothers pack what they can and set off for Charleston. After a wild, nearly disastrous boat ride, they arrive, but only to find that they're still on their own, in a town rife with rumors of an imminent Yankee invasion. Left homeless by a fire, they set off again, this time for General Lee's headquarters. An independent sort who prefers trousers to dresses, Susanna finds that her sheltered, motherless life has left her little prepared for supervising slaves, keeping house, or even finding food for herself and her brothers; she muddles through, and is rewarded by a meeting with the godlike Lee, who expedites a joyful family reunion. Love establishes a strong sense of era with perceptive comments from slaves and slaveowners alike, keeps the plot speeding along, and in Susanna concocts a winning mix of intelligence, strong will, and navet. BY A BOY - 10 YEARS OLD
By A Customer
Three Against the Tide was an adventure about the Civil War. The characters were Susanna, Neddie and Sammy. The main character was Susanna who was 12 years old. She was the oldest of 3 children. She had to write in her journal every day as her father told her too, while her brothers sat down at the lake fishing. The story was about when their father went to war as a spy and did not come back for a couple months. So these three children had to take care of themselves while he was gone. First, they had to run Oakwood, the Plantation they lived on. Secondly, they went to live in Charleston, SC. While having no news at all of their father, they did not know if he was alive or dead. The biggest adventure in the book happened when they moved from Oakwood to Charleston in a boat.
The book was not my favorite book in the world because I've read other books that have had more adventures in them. This one had a couple adventures but not as many as I would have liked.

A really great book!
By Rebecca Herman
Twelve-year-old Susanna lives with her father and two brothers on a plantation on an island off the coast of South Carolina. It's 1861, the Civil War is being fought, and Susanna's father is called away to serve the Confederacy. When the Yankees invade the island, Susanna and her brothers have to flee the island on their own and try to find their father. But first they have to survive. I highly reccomend this book.
