With the widespread use of GIS, multi-scale representation has become an important issue in the realm of spatial data handling. However, no book to date has systematically tackled the different aspects of this discipline. Emphasizing map generalization, Algorithmic Foundation of Multi-Scale Spatial Representation addresses the mathematical basis of multi-scale representation, specifically, the algorithmic foundation.
Using easy-to-understand language, the author focuses on geometric transformations, with each chapter surveying a particular spatial feature. After an introduction to the essential operations required for geometric transformations as well as some mathematical and theoretical background, the book describes algorithms for a class of point features/clusters. It then examines algorithms for individual line features, such as the reduction of data points, smoothing (filtering), and scale-driven generalization, followed by a discussion of algorithms for a class of line features including contours, hydrographic (river) networks, and transportation networks. The author also addresses algorithms for individual area features, a class of area features, and various displacement operations. The final chapter briefly covers algorithms for 3-D surfaces and 3-D features.
Providing a thorough treatment of low-level algorithms, Algorithmic Foundation of Multi-Scale Spatial Representation supplies the mathematical groundwork for multi-scale representations of spatial data.

Excellent high level review of the field
By Mark S. Millman
I've worked with spatial data since 1978 when the primary issues of "computerized mapping" (the term GIS was not yet in popular use) had to do with cartographic presentation. The issues of scale based generalization were a significant challenge, a challenge that has really not been met. What has changed is the retirement of a generation of cartographers who cared and, increasingly, paper maps themselves. The subtle artistry required to render a maximum of useful information at a fixed scale without overwhelming the reader with clutter has been replaced with the power to pan, zoom, and click. There is no doubt that maps have become a bigger part of peoples lives than ever before. Google has done what Intergraph, ESRI, and the multitude of "computerized mapping" vendors from the 21st century could only fantasize about: maps are a part of every day life for the vast majority of the plugged in world. Yet, it is almost not fair to call a dynamic screen image a map, it is something quite different from the static scale representation printed to paper (or linen or plastic).
Static scale printed maps still have a powerful and necessary purpose. They form the basis for legal and contractual obligations. These purposes require a "static" map; something that can be professionally sealed and certified and become part of the public record. They're also pretty handy when you're lost in the woods and your batteries fail.
The age of cartographers bent over sheets of linen scraping off old ink and adding new started to fade just four decades ago and is in its final days. The source of almost all cartographic data is now digital and the cost of paying cartographers to fiddle over the seemingly endless details required of published maps is crushing. Dr. Li's book presents a satisfying overview of the past and current research describing new techniques that only advances in computing power of the last few years have made possible. For anyone interested in the field it is a fascinating read. For anyone tackling the issues it is essential.
