Like a Willow Tree, by Rei Kimura

A willow tree, soft and flowy on the outside, unbreakable and strong on the inside, left to brave the lashings and extremities of wind and storm but never quite breaking. Hanako Ishigaki was just 9 years old when her father decided to uproot the family from traditional and beautiful Kyoto and migrate to Hawaii. ‘You are not uprooting this family to some strange outlandish place where we will have to start all over again and maybe never be accepted,’ his wife ranted. ‘Why, Kazuo? Why? We are Japanese and we should live here till the day we die.’ But this was one time Kazuo Ishigaki refused to budge. We follow Hanako’s arduous journey to Hawaii on a passenger liner and the shock of finding no one waiting for them there. By a sheer stroke of luck, if one could call it that, the Ishigaki family, used to much better times and lives, ended up in Kauia Island in a Japanese settlement called Furusato to work in a sugar plantation alongside thousands of Japanese migrants. The book describes the colorful lives of the Japanese migrant community in Hawaii in the eyes of the young Hanako and the conflict of two cultures, east and west. How eventually did Hanako end up in the big city, Honolulu, where she was to meet James Robertson and start a love affair that was to span and survive 35 years of separation, war and betrayals to end one cold afternoon in a sterile hospital room where the loose ends of two people’s lives and passion finally came together to find closure. And then, one day, at the peak of the post Pearl Harbor backlash on Japanese Americans, when Hanako thought that living behind barbed wires at the Japanese American internment camp of Manzaner, they had hit rock bottom, there was that dreaded knock on the front door and a soldier served a deportation order to Japan on them….. This story is told against a gripping backdrop of war and the horrors and humiliations of the Japanese American war internment camps following Pearl Harbor. But even in the most dire and hopeless circumstances people can dream and Hanako and her best friend, Melanie Tanaka dreamt of pitching their unusual talent in fashion designing into the world of haute couture and high fashion. The odds against them were as unscalable as Mount Fuji in winter but dreams were free…. As the overcrowded ship carrying hundreds of deportees labeled ‘enemy aliens’ approached the shores of Japan, Hanako told herself firmly. ‘We’re going to be all right here, I’m sure of that!’ Was she right? Or would things get really bad before they became better? So many things happened to shake and test the strength of this willow tree that readers may ask how did she continue to get up after each blow? This book is based on the true story of the turbulent life of Hanako Ishigaki as she was tossed around by the winds of migration, war internment camps and an incredibly unlikely and impossible love affair woven into it to add poignance to a story of great courage and determination to survive and succeed against all odds. How will it end?

About the Author
Rei Kimura is a lawyer with a passion for writing about unique events and personalities. She has adopted an interesting style of creating stories around true events and the lives of real people in a number of her books, believing that is the best way of making hidden historical events and people come alive for 21st century readers. With this objective in mind, Rei has touched on historical events like the horrific sinking of the Awa Maru and the Kamikaze pilots of World War II and woven them into touching stories of the people who lived and died through these events. Then there are stories of courage, love and rejection beautifully portrayed in “Butterfly In the Wind” a story of the concubine of Townsend Harris, first American consul to Japan, set against the colorful and turbulent era of the Black Ships. This book has touched the hearts of many and been translated into languages from Spanish, Polish, Russian, Dutch to Thai, Hindi, Indonesian, Marathi.Rei's writing also touches on interesting issues like that raised in “Japanese Magnolia” a book based on the true story of two men, a samurai and a peasant who dared to cross two forbidden areas in feudal Japan, that of homosexuality and a class society “so sharply defined it cut like a knife.”Other controversial stories she has written include “Japanese Rose” a book which asked the question was there ever a Japanese female kamikaze pilot in the Second World War?But it's not all history and culture, she also writes on contemporary events like “Aum Shinrikyo-Japan’s Unholy Sect” an expose of the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway.Occasionally, her love for animals and sense of humor surfaces in this very heart warming and delightful story of a rogue Pomeranian dog, “My Name is Eric,” a complete departure from Rei’s normal story lines but nevertheless, a refreshing one! Kimura considers her writing as part of the perennial quest for truth, challenge and fulfillment. Her books have been translated into various Asian and European languages and widely read all over the world. Apart from being a lawyer, Rei Kimura is also a qualified freelance journalist and is associated with the Australian News Syndicate.

Good historical fiction
By Nature Lover2
I am very fond of historical fiction and Like a Willow Tree is an engaging work set in the pre- and post-World War II era in both Japan and America. This love story is primarily told from the experiences of Japanese-American citizens who were not only interred during the war but for some, like the Ishigaki family, deported back to Japan. And although the Ishigaki family was Nikkei (that is, originally from Japan with long term visas), some of the families that were deported were Sansei or 1st and 2nd generation English-speaking Japanese-Americans who felt like foreigners when they were forcibly returned to their ancestral homeland. The author does a great job of defining for the reader the inner conflict of the protagonists who had to choose, during the war, between their allegiance to one country over the other, when both countries had customs and cultures that were endearing to them. And throughout the book, the parallel of cultural similarities and differences was skillfully conveyed. Racial prejudice, of course, was on display at every level in the US including the Asian community where the Chinese sought to separate themselves from the Japanese all the way up to the highest level of the US government. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it as a good read. So why the three (3) stars?

There were parts of the book where the writing was exceptional but I was disappointed by the many typographical errors that I found, as if Oak Tree Press did not bother to proof-read or edit the material. I could cite a number of examples but a few include "new York", "fare for the word far", and the non-word "acand" (which by the way I was never able to reason the intent). Also on a couple of occasions, several lines of text were missing (e.g., at the beginning of Chapter 23). I don't know if this is an issue of "translating the text to the digital Kindle" (as it has happened with other Kindle books) or if this too is poor editing. However, I am willing to risk purchasing a second title by Rei Kamura but if editing continues to be sloppy, I doubt I'll be looking to read any more of her works.

Finally, when the book shifts to approximately 35 years after WWII, the lead characters are using cell phones for international calls, and this is when the credibility is lost. While the cell phone was introduced as early as 1973, by the early 1980's they were still these huge bulky copies of landline phones and did not have the capability for international calls. The first multi-band (capable of roaming in different countries) cell phone was introduced by Motorola in 1999, some 50 years after the war ended.

needs more editing
By ishibob
The author needs to do more research. Altough a fiction, there is no need to twist the facts on such a sensitive subject. There were no mass relocation from Hawaii to Manzanar. Especially from Kauai. Also the ocean between Japan/Hawaii and the US is the Pacific, not the Atlantic. eg. transatlantic phone calls, traveling on the Atlantic by ship from Hawaii to Japan etc.

Marriage Upon The Rock: Principles of a Christ-Centered Marriage, by Mark Elley

With separations and divorce being the order of the day, it’s evident that marriage institution is under attack and that Christians and non-Christians are alike affected. Indeed the old adage is being reached – marriage is like a besieged city; those in it want to come out and those outside it want to come in. This has also led to many unanswered questions that this book will be trying to answer.
Does marriage work in the modern world? Can a couple uphold the marriage vows made during the wedding service? Can true love exist in marriage in a world plagued by temptations to sexual compromises? Is understanding between a husband and a wife possible in a world full of social pressure? Is a Christian marriage possible in a world that is increasingly sold out to secularism and ungodly tendencies?
I believe that the Bible has answers to these and many other questions regarding marriage institution. I believe God is the founder and sustainer of marriage and that faith in Him is the flame that can keep the fire of love burning between a man and a woman in a marriage relationship. This book lays down significant tools, illustrations and essential principles that point to Christ as the true foundation of marriage. This work is a collection of knowledge and experience in counseling, coaching, teaching and ministry during my long service as a relationship coach, pastor and Bible teacher in different parts of the world.
Some of the things you'll learn from Marriage Upon the Rock (Revised Edition) include:
- Building Marriage on Christ
- Cracking open the ‘nut’ of Relationship
- Attributes of a Christ-Centered Marriage
- How to be a Better Steward for your Spouse
- How to Build Great Communication Skills
- Understanding Women’s Communication Instincts
- Understanding Men’s Communication Instincts
- Insight into man’s and woman’s Sexuality
- How to Build a Simultaneous Sexual Peak

The Martian, by Andy Weir

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

8 Tips for Surviving on Mars from Andy Weir

So you want to live on Mars. Perhaps it’s the rugged terrain, beautiful scenery, or vast natural landscape that appeals to you. Or maybe you’re just a lunatic who wants to survive in a lifeless barren wasteland. Whatever your reasons, there are a few things you should know:

1: You’re going to need a pressure vessel.

Mars’s atmospheric pressure is less than one percent of Earth’s. So basically, it’s nothing. Being on the surface of Mars is almost the same as being in deep space. You better bring a nice, sturdy container to hold air in. By the way, this will be your home forever. So try to make it as big as you can.

2: You’re going to need oxygen.

You probably plan to breathe during your stay, so you’ll need to have something in that pressure vessel. Fortunately, you can get this from Mars itself. The atmosphere is very thin, but it is present and it’s almost entirely carbon dioxide. There are lots of ways to strip the carbon off carbon dioxide and liberate the oxygen. You could have complex mechanical oxygenators or you could just grow some plants.

3: You’re going to need radiation shielding.

Earth’s liquid core gives it a magnetic field that protects us from most of the nasty crap the sun pukes out at us. Mars has no such luxury. All kinds of solar radiation gets to the surface. Unless you’re a fan of cancer, you’re going to want your accommodations to be radiation-shielded. The easiest way to do that is to bury your base in Martian sand and rocks. They’re not exactly in short supply, so you can just make the pile deeper and deeper until it’s blocking enough.

4: You’re going to need water.

Again, Mars provides. The Curiosity probe recently discovered that Martian soil has quite a lot of ice in it. About 35 liters per cubic meter. All you need to do is scoop it up, heat it, and strain out the water. Once you have a good supply, a simple distillery will allow you to reuse it over and over.

5: You’re going to need food.

Just eat Martians. They taste like chicken.

6: Oh, come on.

All right, all right. Food is the one thing you need that can’t be found in abundance on Mars. You’ll have to grow it yourself. But you’re in luck, because Mars is actually a decent place for a greenhouse. The day/night cycle is almost identical to Earth’s, which Earth plants evolved to optimize for. And the total solar energy hitting the surface is enough for their needs.

But you can’t just grow plants on the freezing, near-vacuum surface. You’ll need a pressure container for them as well. And that one might have to be pretty big. Just think of how much food you eat in a year and imagine how much space it takes to grow it.

Hope you like potatoes. They’re the best calorie yield per land area.

7: You’re going to need energy.

However you set things up, it won’t be a self-contained system. Among other things, you’ll need to deal with heating your home and greenhouse. Mars’s average daily temperature is -50C (-58F), so it’ll be a continual energy drain to keep warm. Not to mention the other life support systems, most notably your oxygenator. And if you’re thinking your greenhouse will keep the atmosphere in balance, think again. A biosphere is far too risky on this scale.

8: You’re going to need a reason to be there.

Why go out of your way to risk your life? Do you want to study the planet itself? Start your own civilization? Exploit local resources for profit? Make a base with a big death ray so you can address the UN while wearing an ominous mask and demand ransom? Whatever your goal is, you better have it pretty well defined, and you better really mean it. Because in the end, Mars is a harsh, dangerous place and if something goes wrong you’ll have no hope of rescue. Whatever your reason is, it better be worth it.

From Booklist
Remember Man Plus, Frederik Pohl’s award-winning 1976 novel about a cyborg astronaut who’s sent, alone, to Mars? Imagine, instead, that the astronaut was just a regular guy, part of a team sent to the red planet, and that, through a series of tragic events, he’s left behind, stranded and facing certain death. That’s the premise of this gripping and (given its subject matter) startlingly plausible novel. The story is told mostly through the log entries of astronaut Mark Watney, chronicling his efforts to survive: making the prefab habitat livable and finding a way to grow food, make water, and get himself off the planet. Interspersed among the log entries are sections told from the point of view of the NASA specialists, back on Earth, who discover that Watney is not dead (as everyone assumed) and scramble together a rescue plan. There are some inevitable similarities between the book and the 1964 movie Robinson Crusoe on Mars, but where the movie was a broad sci-fi adventure, the novel is a tightly constructed and completely believable story of a man’s ingenuity and strength in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Riveting. --David Pitt

I'm a hard-science science fiction fan and would rather read hard sc-fi than almost anything. I love stories and movies about Mars, and I'm a fan of survival, castaway, and man-against-the elements stories. I loved Robinson Crusoe, so it should not surprise you that I loved the movie, Robinson Crusoe on Mars. I realize it's not Academy Award material, but to me, it's everything I want it to be, as was this book, The Martian.

The main character, Watney, presumed dead, is accidentally left by his crew mates when an intense Martian dust storm forces them to abort their mission. What follows for part of the book is a logbook style narrative that describes in great technical detail Watney's efforts to extend his life until the next scheduled mission arrives in 4 years. After reading just the first 20% of the book (my Kindle has no page numbers) one can't help but be impressed by the author's depth of knowledge in this regard. In fact, the entire book is an astronaut's primer on extraterrestrial and deep space survival and rescue.

The Martian isn't without its typos and editorial glitches, and I'm not sure if this was a result of a bad Kindle conversion or just a shortsighted editor. For me, though, typos and editing issues paled in comparison to the snowballing storyline, which I gladly admit is not for everyone.

This is not a touchy-feely book about love, romance or relationships. There is no overpowering angle between characters. No good guys in white hats and bad guys in black hats. There's no room for cliches. It's all very business like and scientific. So, if you're looking for Twilight in Space. Or Fifty Shades of Mars. Or Tom Hanks making himself a friend by drawing a face on a soccer ball, you'll probably want to skip this one. This book is simply about the mission, and the cold reality of working hard to turn a wrong into a right.

Another thing you won't find in this book is a lot of heartfelt reminiscing or reflection. There are no flashbacks of our main character fishing with Dad at the old water hole, or him riding his first bicycle without training wheels. This is a book about a guy with a keen intellect surviving on a hostile planet and doing so by making the most out of a given set of resources.

About a third of the way through the book, the author adds third person narratives from mission control and the Hermes space craft, the latter manned by the crew that left our hero behind -- and make no mistake, hero is the operative word. Again, we don't follow our mission control cast of characters back too their respective homes and meet their wives and husbands and get served up cliche insights into their innermost thoughts. Blech! I hate those stories! Which doesn't mean these characters are cookie cutter or superficial. On the contrary, I found the characters sufficiently individuated and interesting.

I highly recommend this book to people who are into reading hard sci-fi of the not-too-distant future, sci-fi without blasters and ray guns or 9' tall aliens that bleed acid. (Btw, I like those stories, too, but good ones are hard to find.)

Somebody did their homework on this one -- and that's what stands out above all else.

Who needs nail clippers?
By Mr. Joe
"I'm stranded on Mars. I have no way to communicate with Hermes or Earth. Everyone thinks I'm dead. I'm in a Hab designed to last 31 days. If the Oxygenator breaks down, I'll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I'll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I'll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I'll eventually run out of food and starve to death. So yeah. I'm f----d." - Mark Watney

As the two-hundred thirty-fourth reader to review THE MARTIAN by Andy Weir, I have no illusion that I can add anything substantive to the plaudits already heaped on this intelligent work of space sci-fi. Simply put, it's a nail-biter that'll trim your finger nail plates down even with the nail beds.

My reading tastes usually don't encompass space fiction because the vast majority of it seems to fall within the realm of extreme fantasy with worlds and ETs of the most fantastical sorts. I prefer my off-Earth stories to have some plausible connection with realistic, albeit extrapolated, technology and situations, and the one book that remains embedded in my memory as simply terrific is from all the way back in 1975 when I was much younger and perhaps more impressionable - Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama. With films, I'm the same way; Outland and Silent Running come to mind. THE MARTIAN is my kind of SF.

In Mars mission engineer-botanist Mark Watney we have a thinking man's hero for the ages, and THE MARTIAN is a story that cries out to be serialized for television.

THE MARTIAN would be ideal for a lengthy trans-ocean plane flight. If you start the book on take-off, you'll likely finish on landing and not even be aware of the hours that passed or the screaming kid a couple of rows back.

You owe yourself this novel. Trust me.

Abandoned on Mars
By Ian J. Miller
A futuristic Robinson Crusoe! Due to a dust storm, Mark Watney is left for dead in the Acidalia region of Mars when the Ares 3 mission is aborted 6 days into the scheduled two months. What follows is largely a logbook of living in a large tent or a small rover for about 550 days on what was supposed to be two month's rations for 6 people. Fortunately there were some potatoes for thanksgiving that were alive, so Mark starts dividing them and growing them. But first he has to make soil, and then water, and so on. Generally speaking, a logbook is a poor technique, but here it is brilliant. You cannot have conversation, and you cannot develop other characters, but did I mention he was abandoned? Alone? You might still think that 550 days stuck in a tent or rover could get boring, but no, this book is absolutely gripping.

Watney was resourceful, and the book is very good at showing the scientific approach to problems, putting numbers to them, and showing what happens if you do what, so in a sense it is also a book of puzzles: this has gone wrong, how can it be fixed? Tension is maintained well because Watney has an unseen companion: Murphy. If it can go wrong, it does, sometimes because of Watney's own lack of knowledge. To make water, first he makes hydrogen. This is not a good idea, and Watney finds out why. Because I have also written a book centred on Mars, I know the author has really spent a lot of time understanding the nature of Mars, and this book shows quite well what being on the surface of Mars would be like. There is the odd error, probably intentional for effect, for example the effects of the dust storm are too great. Martian winds can hit up to 200 k/h, but gas pressures are about 1% of Earth's, so, after correcting for the lower gravitational acceleration and the mass of dust, the forces will still be only a few percent of those of comparable wind velocities on Earth. That, however, is forgiven, because if the author were strictly correct on this, then there would be no story.

To summarize, this is a surprisingly gripping story of survival against all the odds, and I strongly recommend it.

Ian Miller, author of Red Gold.

The Trachtenberg Speed System of Basic Mathematics, by Jakow Trachtenberg

The Trachtenberg Speed System of Basic Mathematics is a revolutionary system for calculating and teaching basic math. Children, who had repeatedly failed in arithmetic until their parents sent them to learn this method, were able to perform amazing calculations within seconds. In one demonstration, a ten year old child, when asked to multiply 5132437201 times 452736502785, simply wrote on the blackboard the answer, 2323641669144374104785, in seventy seconds. He never set up the basic and familiar line by line chart, multiplying and adding each row of numbers. Instead, he just wrote down the answer without any of the intermediate steps. To demonstrate his method, Trachtenberg chose children who were doing poorly in their school work. These were children used to failure, shy and withdrawn; or at the other extreme, rebellious and unmanageable. The children's responses to the new, easy way of doing arithmetic was immediate. They found it delightfully like a game. The feeling of accomplishment soon made them lose their disagreeable traits. Equally important were the by-products the pupils attained while learning this new system. As these youngsters became proficient in handling numbers, they began to spurt ahead in all their studies. Their IQs went up as well! Not only did the child learn to compute, but his IQ also went up. Since all problems were worked out in his head, he developed an excellent memory and his ability to concentrate was increased. The Trachtenberg system, once learned, can take the drudgery out of the arithmetic that is part of everyone's daily stint. Experts believe that the Trachtenberg system could have far-reaching effects on education and science.

About the Author
Jakow Trachtenberg (1888-1953) developed this system during the seven years he spent in Nazi concentration camps during World War II. He had been born in Odessa, Russia on June 17, 1888 and was recognized as a genius at an early age. When the First World War broke out, he was a Pacifist, opposed to the war, and wrote published articles attacking the war. When the Czar of Russia was overthrown, he had to flee to Germany. When Hitler came to power, he did the same thing again, writing magazine articles and books attacking the policies of the Soviet and German governments. His books included “Das Land das blutet. Bilder aus dem heutigen Russland” meaning “The country bleeds. Pictures from today's Russia” in 1928. In 1931, he wrote, “Das Problem der UdSSR”. In 1933, he wrote “Die Greuelpropaganda ist eine Lgenpropaganda sagen die deutschen Juden selbst” meaning “Atrocity propaganda is a Lgenpropaganda says the German Jews themselves” which stated “Some Jewish circles in Germany, who favored German nationalism, felt that the anti-Nazi reactions outside Germany had been exaggerated or distorted. They were afraid, that anti-Nazism would endanger the position of the Jews”. “Die Greuelpropaganda ist eine Lgenpropaganda sagen die deutschen Juden selbst. Atrocity Propaganda is based on Lies say the Jews of Germany themselves. La propagande d'atrocites n'est que mensonges declarent les juifs allemands eux-memes.” Nachdruck der Jakow Trachtenberg Verlag Ausgabe von 1933. Here he is defending the German government from attacks by Jews outside of Germany, calling it “Atrocity Propaganda”. This may explain why he did not flee to the United States as did so many Jewish intellectuals during this period. The immediate prewar years found Professor Trachtenberg living in Vienna and Yugoslavia - almost always as a fugitive. In Vienna in 1936 he wrote “Der russische Bauer heult unter dem Bolschewismus” meaning “The Russian farmer howls under the Bolshevism”. The police state finally caught up with him, and he spent a total of seven years in various concentration camps. It was during these years that Professor Trachtenberg developed his system of speed mathematics. Most of this was done without pencil and paper, since none were available. Thus the majority of the steps are performed mentally.

Would recommend, but with a caveat.
By Goldeneye
I get bored with doing math. This has nothing to do with an inability to do math and more to do with the fact that a lot of the work required to do it is tedious. Because of that fact, I've been looking for a easy and fast mental math system to take out the menial work out of doing basic math.

Amazingly, I managed to find a system that fit those requirements: The Trachtenberg Speed System of Basic Mathematics.

First off, let me state that all the 5 star positive reviews are justified. This is, in fact, an amazing mental math system that goes a few steps beyond what's necessary for a mental math book. If it had merely given you a quick way to do addition, multiplication, division, subtraction, and square roots, it would have been a good book, if somewhat indistinguishable from all the other mental math books. There are two things that set it apart from other systems:
1. It gives you a way to check your answer that's quick and works for all operations
2. It's a complete system, not just a set of tricks, thus it anchors it self in your brain.

However, while I do like this book, I have to give a caveat that forces me to knock this book down from five to four stars. For whatever reason, my version of this book as published by Ishi Press International and fulfilled by Amazon, appears to not have subtraction part of the Trachtenberg method. Perhaps the original version did have it, but it was mistakenly left out of the Ishi Press version. This is a shame, as the cover explicitly said it did have subtraction in the book, and everything else in the book is really good and well worth your money.

I would still recommend buying the book, even if the version you get doesn't have subtraction portion.

P.S: If you do know where to find a copy that has the subtraction, leave the information in the comments below.

Book's claims are misleading - BUT still helpful
By Micah Cowan
Disclaimer: stopped reading after ch. 4, due to irritation at misleading claims of the system, which is past all the parts covering multiplication, but falls short of applying to division, and square roots.

First of all, I want to answer the question: will this book help you be faster with arithmetic? Very likely yes, particularly if you practice, a LOT.

However, if you have been lead to believe that this system is an entirely different approach from the lengthy "tables" method of multiplying large numbers together... NO. No, it just isn't. If you're examining carefully, the basic method taught in ch. 2 consists of ALL the same steps you would perform by writing out the product table, and then summing the results. The difference is, you do them in a different order (completely resolving a single digit at a time, rather than waiting for a later sum), and you do it all in your head. Seriously, that's the entire difference.

The "two-finger" method taught in ch. 3 is recommended as an alternative for use where the numbers involved contain a high number of high-value digits (such as 8s and 9s). It's a different method, but it's still the same deal: you're performing ALL the same steps you're already accustomed to in long-form multiplication, just in your head, and in a different order. In this case, there's potentially less "math" to keep in your head at a time, but keeping your place in where you're working your problem becomes more challenging (part of why it's called "two-finger" - people end up using their fingers to track where they are in the problem), and you're actually REPEATING some of those steps. The main advantage is that you have less to "carry" from one digit of the answer to the next, which is why it's ideal for high-value digits; but the technique is probably actually _slower_ than school-taught methods, at least in terms of number-of-steps performed.

So how is the method faster? Basically: it isn't. If you can write figures out quickly, I suspect many people will get their work done _faster_ using the ordinary school-taught "tables" method. The difference will be in how much work is shown on the paper, not in the speed of the results. Moreover, the school-taught method requires far less concentration (keeping far less in your head at a time), and makes it a good deal easier to check your work for mistakes.

Of course, if you can think your answers far quicker than you can write digits, then provided you have a decent memory and can maintain concentration, this method may well be quite a bit faster than you. That's really where the "speed" tricks of this book come into play: they encourage you to perform 2-3 arithmetic steps at a time, practicing towards "thinking" only the final result of those steps. You still DO all those steps, but much of it becomes less conscious - and in that way, you work faster because you're not slowed down by explicitly thinking it in your mother tongue.

So, YES, this book can make you faster at arithmetic. But it will take an awful lot of drilling before that can happen, or I suspect before you can even come close to matching your speed with the tables method. In the meantime, it also demands much more concentration, and provides more opportunities for mistakes, at least until you've gained quite a bit of mastery through practice. (The checksum method for sanity-checking answers, taught in ch. 4 is neat, though.)

A note: the cool tricks in ch. 1 for multiplying numbers by a single-digit multiplicand, are completely discarded when it comes to doing longer multiplication, starting in ch. 2. You do not explicitly use those techniques past ch. 1, and in fact if you did explicitly use them, you would slow yourself down. It's not EXPLICITLY stated, but apparently the ONLY purpose of that chapter is to shore up your understanding of the times tables - that's right, you DO still need the times tables, despite misleading statements to the contrary in ch. 1. You can definitely use the chapter-one methods to shore up any holes in your recollection of the times tables - but ch. 1 only describes doing them on paper, usually with large, multi-digit multiplicands, whereas really, for effective use in later chapters, you'd want to just learn the rules as applied to single-digit multiplicands, and then drill them to the point that you've memorized the answers (so, times tables).

But they ARE cool techniques, and even if you don't end up using them much directly, they're still useful to know, and as the author states in the book, they may just rekindle your interest in arithmetic in general.

But take my advice: learn the "rules" for multiplying by multipliers ranging from 5-11, but DO NOT BOTHER with learning the rules for 4 and (especially) 3. As the book states, they're included for completeness/rigor, but shouldn't be necessary for most people since everyone knows the 3's and 4's times tables (a baffling statement when I encountered it, as I thought the whole point was to eliminate the necessity of times tables - but when I realized in ch. 2 and beyond that you don't use these "rules" methods past ch. 1, it made a great deal more sense). 4's and 3's times tables are a snap, but the rules for multiplying them using the Trachtenberg chapter-one "rules" methods are more complex than any of the larger digits, and so making mistakes is easier. The rule for multiplying by 5 is _particularly_ easy, and everyone should learn to do that.

So, in summary, the book is helpful, it pretty much does what it claims (given a ton of practice)... but it's not really any different, in terms of numbers-of-steps to perform, than what you already know. Mainly, it teaches some fresh ways of looking at the subject, and makes a great platform for drilling and practicing - but you could probably get similar results from drilling and practicing the school method, too.

Edition notes: latter editions of this book appear to have some of the problems in ch. 1 "filled in", then erased. It could lead some to suspect they received used copies when they ordered new: nope, if you look very closely, you'll see that the erased figures are printed in "silk screen" dots, a tell-tale sign that they were actually PRINTED that way. :-p

A final word: don't listen to any reviews saying the techniques "don't work" for certain numbers, or certain situations. Such reviewers either haven't gotten to the final set of rules for a given digit in chapter one (there are some cases where it gives an "incomplete" list of rules at the start, along with some carefully-chosen examples that will work, and then follows on with the "real" list of rules), or they're forgetting one of the rules they were meant to perform, or else they're forgetting that they have to perform the steps one final time when they reach the invisible "zero" to the left of the multiplicand. At any rate, there are algebraic proofs of the techniques at the end of the book of all the techniques taught. I haven't looked through those, but they're not difficult to prove for yourself if you're comfortable in algebra.

Just a bit of math fun...
By D. Knox
I actually had a copy of this book when I was a child, and took great pleasure in learning some of the tips'n'tricks. I was so pleased to purchase this other copy in order to allow my son the same opportunity now. I guess the enjoyment you get out of it would greatly depend on how much you enjoy math games. If you don't, I sure wouldn't buy this! lol But it is very, very instructive and a great purchase for the middle school, high school, or college student. Certainly even math-oriented adults would enjoy learning tricks to make math easier. To me, a good part of the positive in it is just getting kids to *think* about how numbers go together, and how to manipulate them. If you make math fun and interesting, it can only be a plus for their overall education! :)
