Good Book, Quick Read

If you want to go to prison then this is a must read, but then you will have missed the author's point. It is clear that he is writing his observations and experience so those working toward such a fate might change, but it is also clear that he is perfectly happy with letting you make your own decisions. He is non-judgmental simply telling you what to expect should your choices lead you to an arrest and beyond. While reading, however, remember that this is not a book for grammar or prose so don't be critical of his style. I do have a question for the author; is that Martha Stewart on the bottom center of your book's cover? Ha. Good book man, thanks for writing it and being so straight forward. I bought the kindle edition but plan on buying a hard copy and giving it to a kid I know who's already in reform school.

worth every nickel. . . even if it is a laser print !!!

According to the publisher's colophon, this edition is a digital reprint and it shows!! You'd think for $150 they could give us real ink. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the price. This work is invaluable. However, THE TEXT IS RIDDLED WITH ERRORS. There are missing particles, punctuation errors, and a host of other typos. The bold italics are inconsistent and there is at least one passage of the root text that is just plain garbled. A scholar with a reputation like Stephen Hodge should have his work proofread BEFORE it goes to press. The "Mahavairocana Tantra" is clearly not for the tenderfoot, but one should be able to read this text without always having to wonder: "is that another typo or did the author really mean to say that." Unfortunately, the sloppy presentation does not inspire confidence in the translation.

The Maha-Vairocana Abhisambodhi Tantra

Drawing from the extant Tibetan and Chinese translations of the lost Sanskrit original Hodge has produced an amazing rendition of the Maha-Vairocana Sutra. His introduction is thorough and his outline of its major themes makes the reading thereof more than intelligible. His method of translation is also to be praised, for instead of sticking unnecessarily close to the literal method or, the other too common error of translations of Buddhist texts, mixing in philosophical terminologies of post-renaissance Western thought, he has instead left all key terminologies untranslated; their various meanings explored in Buddhaguyha's commentray and in the very welcome glossary. All-in-all this is a great starting point in the study of the Maha-Vairocana Sutra, itself one of the most important text of Vajrayana/Mantrayana Buddhism.

If I had to compare this work with Christian texts, it would have to be put into the Gnostic category. It is a truly remarkable translation giving the reader access into the so-called Buddhist mysteries. Above all this Tantra is about Mind, the absolute substance of reality, and how to enter into communion with it. For mystical types out there, break your piggy bank and buy it.
