Thank goodness I only rented this book from the library...

Before anyone gets confused, I am not Scott Whitelaw that is my dad, and I am a 18 year old girl.

I have no idea why this book got such a high rating. I usually give fantasy books a little bit of lee-way in their mistakes since it can be hard to create a unique world that doesn't echo our own too much. Not only is the world unimaginative, with places with names such as "The Mountain", but the character are unrelatable, the plot not fully explained or developed, and the dialogue can be stilted with gaps missing in the conversations that make following them confusing.

The main conflict of the novel is about a special dance that will determine the fate of the kingdom but the dance is not explained fully and I spent most of my time wondering what is was and why should I care.

The main character is bland and doesn't change much throughout the novel. She is almost 16 and seems to be addicted to sex. Don't get me wrong, I'm not averse to a few well written sex scenes in a book, but the author's scenes were brief, meaningless, and poorly written. Here is a short summary of the main character's love life. She is almost raped, then she meets a evil barbarian dude who she knows she shouldn't like but still thinks he's hot anyways so she has sex with him for every night for about 4 months. she is taken prisoner by said evil barbarian but she still has sex with him, multiple times, and apparently likes it. then she realizes that she is in love with her teacher who is years older than her and whom she hates with a passion for no reason that is ever explained in the book. she has sex with him twice even though he is on the brink of death. Then she has sex with the evil barbarian dude and still likes it and soo on and so on.

So in conclusion all I have to say is DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. I actually finished the book after 3 weeks of putting it up and down and I wish I hadn't. It doesn't EVER get better.

A wonderful, intricate mind-rush

I took a chance on this book based on the reviews here and on the RomanticSF website. I'm really glad I did. Having not read any Judith Tarr books I prepared to be pleasantly surprised, or at least place this in my 'to sell as a used book' pile.

Pleasantly surprised is not the half of it. From the very beginning one is drawn into an intricately shaped and wonderfully formed world where the magic of horses, power, inner strength and individuality in the face of adversity is approached from an intelligent, interesting and otherworldly viewpoint. There were times in the tale where I found myself wishing I could be Valeria for the day so I could experience this all first hand - the characters are that realistic and enjoyable to read.

At times, as non-prudish as I thought myself, the love and torture scenes were so well written and emphatically crafted into the story at such excellently timed points in the tale, that I was reminded in a positive eye-opening way that what I was reading was a very adult, but yet magical and powerful tale of fantasy - so different from some other fantasy tales, which are often de-sexed or de-clawed when it comes to the realities that some of the characters in the stories face. Don't get me wrong, this isn't pornographic or graphic in horror proportions. The 3rd person narrator just tells it like it is, but with such craftsmanship that you can't help but empathise with the characters' situation in the story. Excellently written.

Definitely a tale to read when you want to be drawn into a superbly crafted, magical, wonderfully intricate fantasy tale that will have you looking at the world quite differently when you have finished reading it. I look forward to the second book. Refreshing, interesting and a very good read. Highly recommended.

Could Have Been a LOT Better

I had high hopes for this book. I still like the premise and the basic plot line of the novel: a girl gets "called" to join the exclusive Riders, who have previously all been male. Her struggles begin by simply getting to the Riders, to being trained and accepted as a Rider, to an international plot to destroy the kingdom. All these elements of the plot, I didn't mind. I enjoyed it actually. But, somewhere along the way, I feel that Brennan became too caught up with the sexuality of her main character, Valeria.

From the middle of the book to the end, it seems that every few pages she's having sex - and with 2 men at that. In one part, she goes from sleeping with one man then to the next practically during the same day. I'm not a prude or anything (I hope!), the moments of sex aren't too explicit, but I've never liked a heroine to tosses herself from one man to the next. She seems to have absolutely no control over her physical needs. In another seen, she sleeps with one of her lovers on the floor while her other lover is unconscious in the bed next to her! I'm sorry, but... Ugh! She knows one of her lovers is in a plot to destroy everything she's been taught to believe in... but he visits her and they have sex. EVERY TIME. The amount of sex and the awkward situations (like those previously mentioned) caused to me gradually lose respect in Valeria. She began to irritate me. Her responses seemed to grow more and more unrealistic - and if one would argue that it COULD be realistic, Valeria would not be someone that I would want to know or read about.

I don't have anything against the protagonists, uh.. "enjoying" themselves - but when these interludes grow in number to rival the plot... well, you have to draw the line somewhere. After awhile all I could think about was how utterly and completely horny Valeria was. Not a good thought for the supposed "savior" of the country.

As Good as the first

I read the first one, a street cat named bob a couple of years ago. i quickly starting following James on Facebook and was excited to learn there would be a second book. i pre-ordered it as soon as it was available and waited until its release date. it was well worth the wait. it made me laugh it made me cry, and it left me wanting more. anyone who is a cat lover...not a animal lover will love this book. not only that it continues to show the power of an animal to help heal a human soul.

I love Bob

This is the continuing story of my favorite cat and his owner. I first met Bob in the book A Streetcat named Bob and was touched how the 2 street souls saved each other. I couldn't wait for a sequel. Here it is.
The tale this time more of the interaction of Bob and James. How extraordinary Bob is and how jealous and cruel people still can be even when you are trying your best to be your best. A good read and I hope again for more on Bob and James. I am a big fan of Bob!!!

I loved the original Bob the Street Cat and frankly, bought this book for the cover - Bob looks amazing in the knit scarf! But the book didn't have that much fresh content from the original, so I was a bit disappointed. But still fun to relive the adventures of James and Bob.

I bought this as a gift, because I've owned an earlier version of this book for years, and use it as a regular reference. This one is so much nicer than our original, I almost considered keeping it, and gifting our old one (but I didn't)!

Beautiful Artwork

This book has a special place on my screened-in porch. I've found all the birds I've seen in my yard quite easily using this book. The drawings of the birds a beautiful.

My only complaint is that a lot of the book is taken up with migratory maps. I wish instead that there were more color photographs and more information about the mating and nesting habits of the birds. I realize this is just a field guide and not an encyclopedia, but I really don't need all those maps.

I think I'm going to find a another book with more of the information I want in it and keep them together. That way, after I've determined what bird I've just seen, I can read the other details I'd like to know about it.

Bought for my wife... she likes it just fine but is a bit disappointed by the size of the thing. The old field guide fit a back pocket perfectly, this one is too big for that and requires a different carry method. Otherwise an improvement over the old version.

The dream chaser ( Bible for those ready to take that leap)

I received this book less than a week ago. I will start by saying I am not a reader. But I completed this book within a week. As I read this book it literally gave me chills. This book gave me so much more confidence, confirmation and guidelines to follow my goals as a entrepreneur. I will say anybody that's wanting to start there own business, but don't know which way to go, feeling scared to take that leap , lack of funds and etc. This is the go to Book.

Honest, Informative, and Inspirational gem about the journey from a dream to your destiny

I have read several bodies of work on the topic of passion fulfillment and pursuing aspirations, and I must say that this by far the best. With this book, Tony Gaskins has created somewhat of a one stop shop for everything. You will get some motivation to discover your passion and purpose in life. At the same time, you will hear his testimony on his journey from humble beginnings to an abundance of blessings. If you think that is a lot, you will also get some tips and advice on starting and maintaining your business (for those looking into entrepreneurship.)\

Fans of his other work will note that the book is noticeably longer than other publications of his. I can confidently say that it is worth every extra word. The content flows perfectly and is organized in a way that the reader see his progression, starting from working a full time job and discovering his dream. Many of the readers are at that place in life, so it makes his story even more relatable. You will notice that there is no filler material as well. I have read books before where the author was clearly trying to fill extra space to make the book longer. Here, all material is pertinent to illustrating the entire story.

What I am most impressed with the book is his ability to maintain a tone and style that does not alienate any audience. He doesn't speak over anyone's head with extensive ten dollar words to make himself seem smarter. He delivers the messages in a simple yet profound manner. He is also raw when it comes to the material. I don't mean profane or vulgar when I saw raw, but rather transparent and honest. You will know what struggles, failures, and areas of opportunity are part of his journey. It's a vulnerability that is appreciated and demonstrates that he is human as well. Some people paint themselves as larger than life, but you will not get that from Gaskins. Very humble, passionate servant of God using his talents and gifts to fulfill a greater purpose.

For those looking for a get rich quick scheme, this isn't the book for you. For those who just want to hear every fantasy will come true, you need to look further as well. Hard work and sacrifices are necessary to achieve your dreams, and that is what the book will teach you. If you are driven and trying to find some inspiration and direction on moving forward with your dream, definitely pick this up. If you are a entrepreneur or professional that is lost in life, pick this book up. Finally, if you have made some mistakes or bad decisions in life, this is a must have. You will get the testimony from someone who has been in similar situations as well as how to pick yourself up and do great things for society.

Great read and I look forward to more of his publications in the future.

It's God-breathed!!!

I've read up to Chapter 9 after receiving it only a week and half ago! I instantly recognized that the very words that flowed from Tony were directly from God. This book was God-breathed, because only He could address so many heart-related concerns for stepping out into entrepreneurship. Only He could give Tony the words to break down the mental strongholds-aka fear- that keep myself and others from even taking the first step. I commend Tony for being so transparent and obedient, it's only through this level of servant hood that others can grow and develop into all that God has called them to be. So, for those that need a serious dose of fire in their belly, more practically steps, answers to the many questions constantly swirling in their head, and a resonant voice of motivation to silence the thoughts of doubt and fear, get this book and do what God is calling you to do! God bless you and your process!
