Great information but Very wordy. Some sentences are repeated again within the chapter. I don't see any significant changes with this edition compared to 3rd. If anything, I would have bought the 3rd

Errors abound

This review is related to the textbook, NOT the seller. The seller shipped the book quickly and it was in great condition. However, the TEXTBOOK is riddled with numerous errors and CONSTANT redundancy! If the repetition was omitted, the textbook would be half the size. Obviously no one proofs the textbook before printing. One section stated that during the turn of the century, people did not go to hospitals and communicable diseases were the leading cause of death...Well, this was true at the turn of the 20th century! This book has been revised several times in the 21st century, so that statement is no longer true!!! One chapter discussed a 2008 study that predicted events from 2007 (not much of a prediction!). Very unprofessionally written. Maybe professors & schools need to read the text they require their students to read.

Save money - buy the 3rd edition

The information in the book is fine, though I agree with other reviews here that the presentation is a bit wordy. Wendy H.'s review is right; there have not been significant changes since the 3rd edition. As far as I can tell, the updates mainly consist of substituting "Healthy People 2020" in the 4th edition for "Healthy People 2010" in the 3rd. On the first day of class, some people admitted they bought the older edition. Our professor replied, "well, they're pretty much the same," and then emailed us a list of page equivalents for the readings. So I came on Amazon, and bought a used 3rd edition. This is why I never take off the school bookstore's shrink-wrap until after the first class.

The authors, respectively founding director and assistant director of the Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character at Boston University, clearly delineate the difference between the trendiness of current "values" education and the timeliness of moral instruction. "Socrates long ago stated that the mission of education is to help people become both smart and good. In recent decades the second part of that definition has suffered in American schools and colleges." Steeped in classical and literary references, the book opens with a convincing and inspiring argument advocating character education in the public school system. The authors move on to the roles played by parents, teachers and students in incorporating the tenets of moral instruction into the academic milieu. Too often character education is handled incorrectly, they say, offering elaborate examples of "personal relativism" and the dangers of teachers who fear imposing values on their students. The authors argue that there are moral precepts accepted by society as a whole, and that adults should have the courage to teach them. Numerous appendices offer lists and descriptions of important virtues and ways of inculcating them through example and curriculum. I bought this book for a class. I really like the way the authors simplified the reason for building character in your students - "knowing good, seeing good, and doing good." It's a good starting point.

Excellent Resource for Parents, Teachers and Schools

This is a wonderful, easy-to-read book about character education. It provides coherent, *non-religious* arguments in favor of character education, and then provides some practical guidelines and resources for implementation. In the wake of Columbine, how can anybody question the need for character education, particularly in the public schools?

A strong move toward strong character education...

This book discusses the shift in American education from "values-neutral" and "strictly content" education toward a different and necessary ideal: educating youngsters to live a "good life." (This is the goal that movie watchers saw in the final scene of "Saving Pvt. Ryan," where the older Ryan asks his wife and children, "Did I lead a good life?") Both authors are from the Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character at Boston University. They write primarily for educators and have teachers in mind. They promote the idea that education is in "its fullest sense is inescapably a moral enterprise" (p. 190).
I found the book to be well writeen and filled with many good examples. I particularly liked the Appendices (76 pages), filled with good advice. Ryan and Bohlin also discuss how character education is different from "values clarification" and "teaching a viewpoint." In character education, students discover the importance of (or lack of) virtues; that there are multiple answers to moral questions; that characters in literature and history "grow into" their moral positions, and that character education wishes to inculcate the importance of "knowing good, seeing good, and doing good."
This is the coming age in U.S. education. This book along with some others (William Damon, The Moral Child; Bringing in a New Era in Character Education; Thomas Lickona, Educating for Character) will provide a good theoretical background. Ryan and Bohlin warn us away from pre-packaged character education activities, and, as a result, I am not quite sure where to go from here (which is why I took off one star).

Richard Clogg has been Lecturer in Modern Greek History at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies and King's College, University of London, Reader in Modern Greek History at King's College, London and Professor of Modern Balkan History in the University of London. Great book that will uplift all who read it

David has written a book that the 21st century church needs. The church needs to focus on what Jesus has to say to those who claim Him as savior. I plan to read this again and again. Thank you Dr.Alves for an uplifting and much needed study on what it really means to be "sons of God"

A Unique and Excellent Book (and an easy read, at that!)

"We're the 'sons of God' . . . So What?" (by Dr. David C. Alves) fills an important gap in the 21st-century Christian library. From a position that includes both theological expertise and thorough personal experience, Dr. Alves carefully expounds the thesis of John 1:12 ("as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God...") - while simultaneously and systematically demolishing the negative self-image that many Christians have inherited from an obsolete form of theology that sought to convince us that we were mere beggars, slaves or "worms."

The book's subtitle encourages the reader (assumed to be a Christian) to "Believe God About Who You Really Are!" So, this is not a dry dissertation on the "biblical subject" of "divine sonship" (the book includes a brief "dissertation" on that "subject," but it is by no means "dry")! It is, rather, a practical exposition of how this important theme relates to daily Christian living on a range of very real and personal levels - from spiritual disciplines to sensible diets.

I have read hundreds (probably more than 1,000) books on the broad category of "Christianity" in the past 40 years, but I would have to say that this one stands out as unique among them in its topic, range and appeal. A MUST read for anyone who wants to go deeper with Abba!

I'm not a PHD, and don't have any other titles in front of or behind my name (none worth repeating anyway) - but I have been a believer for 25 years. This book by David C. Alves was life changing. To get in your head the perspective that we are the sons of God and not just these terrible people that God decided He'd save - is life changing. All through church and growing up as a Christian, there was always "you're bad, God is good, try harder"... To consider that we were orphans, not even aware of our desperate need for Him, and that He loved us SOOO much even when we were in a sinful state - changes everything.It increases my awareness of grace, peace, and even how I look at God,the Father to the fatherless. I was moved to the point of tears considering all of this. The Lord prompted my wife and I to adopt a little boy, through speaking to my heart through David's book. I believe that this book will not only be a blessing, but will change your life - if you ask the Lord to let it before you begin reading!

A very useful, very practical and concise guide

Dr. Vasant Patil, MD, the author of "A to Z Ayurveda Practical Prescriber" is associate professor in the department of graduate studies in panchakarma at Shri Vijay Mahantesh Ayurvedic Medical College in Ilkal, Karnataka (India) and is director of the Atreya Ayurvedic Foundation and consultant to the Atreya Ayurvedic Hospital and Panchakarma Center. This present work appears to be the first of a multi-volume series entitled Atreya's Guidelines for Ayurvedic Practice.

Efficient and informed prescribing is a necessary basis for effective and safe patient care. A great many allopathic, and even homeopathic drug vademecums and practical prescriber-type handbooks are widely available but this publication is a first in English for use by Ayurvedic physicians and practitioners. This 158-page e-book is organized into disease categories (using standard Western diagnostic categories), specifying for each 3 to 6 formulations for the practitioner to select among.

Where practical, the formulations are grouped into remedies intended to address the vataja, pittaja and kaphaja forms of the pathologies treated. Each disease entry is followed by a short accounting of things (foods, activities, environments, etc.) to advise the patient to enjoin or avoid.

This is an extremely useful, highly portable guide to prescribing from the Ayurvedic material medica, and suffers only a little from its occasional lapse into "non-standard" English usage.

Professor Patil has made a very creditable effort and I enthusiastically recommend his work for both practitioners and students.
