This part of the Reader is of interest for Kurdish Oral History Studies too for it consists of various recordings of historical information, based on the personal experience of the speakers. The Reader contains two Kurdish-English glossaries and a grammar section. This constitutes a comprehensive outline of the subjects under study along with a fundamental description of the cornerstones of Kurmanji grammatical categories, and explanations of the main discrepancies between the local Kurmanji variants and the literary language with examples taken from the selections. Additionally, the book offers English translations of selected texts with an English-Kurdish dictionary of linguistic terms.

James Patterson's name may be blazing on the cover and spine but it is because of the co-author, Chris Grabenstein, that I picked up this book. It's a truly delightful animal fantasy with themes of being different, lab use of animals, and the sense of family. I have an affinity for books suitable for the 7-11 age range and this is the perfect sort of book for kids that age ready to move onto a "real" chapter book. Each chapter is 3 to 5 pages long, with the majority of them 4 pages. Each chapter has a header illustration and either a full or half-page illustration. Something actually happens in each chapter and they call out to read "just one more" chapter. Comparable to Avi's Dimwood Forest series but on a younger level. A satisfying read!

Johnson's history begins with the Bible and ends with the establishment of the State of Israel. Astutely divided into seven sections, (Israelites, Judaism, Cathedocracy, Ghetto, Emancipation, Holocaust, and Zion), the work describes the complex interplay between Jewish and world history and shows how the course of Western civilization has been immensely influenced by this numerically small group. It's no mean feat to successfully compress 4000 years of history into 645 pages, but Johnson has more than met the challenge. Despite a few reservationsE. G. A Saga Of Four Thousand Years!

This is my third book by British historian Paul Johnson. There is no question that he is an extremely talented writer and an excellent but opinionated historian. As always this combination makes for a lively and exciting read. Johnson states in the introduction that, as a believing Christian, he feels he owes much to the Jewish people who he greatly admires. He therefore felt that he wanted to write a complete history. It proves that a good Jewish history does not need to be written by a Jew. Johnson divides Jewish history into a series of epochs, each one of which consumes a part in the book. The chapters are called "Israelites" which covers the biblical period, "Judaism" which covers the period from the building of the Second Temple through the early Christian and early Islamic period, "Cathedocracy" in which Johnson deals with the experience of the Jews under medieval Christendom and Islam, "Ghetto" which deals with the late Medieval and Renaissance period in Europe. "Emancipation" which discusses the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe, "Holocaust" which needs no further explanation and "Zion" which covers not only the birth of modern Israel but also the post-war Jewish experience world wide.
This book is enormously detailed and highly opinionated. Johnson's affection for the Jewish people shines through on virtually every page. Never one to hedge on a conclusion, Johnson has opinions on everyone from Abraham to Begin. My favorite chapter was the opening one, "Israelites". Here Johnson attempts to use similarities between biblical descriptions and known facts of other ancient civilzations to demonstrate that the bible, from Abraham forward is essentially historical. This section will be of enormous interest to everyone, whatever your knowledge of the bible. The Jewish saga is the human saga. It is complete with pathos, absurdity, tragedy and triumph. It is remarkable that an ancient people could survive under such hostile conditions. Really a miracle. Johnson captures the essence of that miracle. The entire book will be of interest to those with less than complete knowledge of Jewish history. It will also be excellent reading for those who have a good knowledge of Jewish history because of Johnson's excellent writing ability. This book is well worth the money.

The best one-volume Jewish history book, period!

As an Orthodox Jew, an "insider", I was absolutely (and positively) amazed to see an "outsider", like Mr. Johnson, penetrate through the layers of confusion and misunderstandings and really "gets it". In the words of Rabbi Berel Wein (a contemporary Jewish historian), "Mr. Johnson did a much better job than many secular Jewish historians". There are many things I disagree with in this book but more often then not I found myself nodding in agreement and underlining key sentences. All this is my commentary on the CONTENTS of the book, when it comes to lucidity, choice of words and philosophical depth, well... Brilliant is putting it mildly. This book is a must-read for Jews and non-Jews alike!

One of the best histories of the Jews

I have read histrories of the Jews by at least half a dozen authors and I rate Johnson's as the best. Just as he successfully captured the character of the American people in "A History of the American People," so too, he captures the essence of Judaism, it's culture and history. What is remarkable about these two works is he is not an American (he's English) nor Jewish (he's Roman Catholic) yet observing from the "outside," he does great justice to both America and to Jews. I consider myself to be well versed in Jewish history and traditions. I am well read on the subject and, indeed, I have taught a college course in Judaism (at Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY). I find Johnson's views to be insightful and his facts to be laid out with no glaring errors. Starting in prebiblical times and continuing to the present, he tells a remarkable story. If you read only one history of the Jews, you would do well to select this one.

Beautiful, but ...

I first would like to say that I do not disrespect the artist/author of the book, I think her artwork is great and I even preordered the book as soon as it was listed.
This book is gorgeous and practical. Her one style of faux calligraphy is very pretty and the examples are very clear.
BUT, there is only one style of "cursive" hand lettering demonstrated and three block letter or print examples. BUT, the blank pages.... About 45% of the book is blank pages, not to mention all the white space. It makes for a very clean look on a book but it feels like they could have printed a booklet and told you to buy a realm of paper for practice instead. Even with the printed guidelines for practice the amount of blank pages is excessive. Pages 96-110 are ENTIRELY BLANK but for the page number, and so is almost half of the book.
It is introductory so it is strictly for beginners.
The cover is very hard and the wire bound feature is very nice for practicing. If you use the pages for writing you don't need an extra notebook.

Lacking Actual Teaching & Helpful Content

I love the author's work and hate to write a poor review but this book is a poor teacher of lettering. There are MANY practice pages but little instruction. Really it's just a book of faux calligraphy practice pages with arrows showing the direction of the letters and telling you to pick up your pen between letters. This information can be widely accessed by free lettering sources. In purchasing a $30.00 book I expect more inside information, tips and tricks and showing me HOW she achieves her style of lettering, etc... For example, the flourishes pages literally just tells you that flourishes and illustrations are great to add to your lettering then shows you a 2" x 2" example of the author's own "Bless Your Heart" design (with zero instructions on how she achieved it) and has about a 6"x3" area next to that design that says "Practice Here." So essentially you can just google "chalk full of love bless your heart" and see the image of that design and practice it yourself and you've received the same amount of info on flourishing as she gives in the book. Unfortunately this book is a well marketed and branded exterior of book with little helpful content within.

This book is beautiful! I agree with some ot the previous posts that there ARE a lot of empty pages but I like that because I never seem to have a book and paper in the same place. And, there is an additional pdf packet available with extra things like combining letters that is super useful as well. It is really good for beginners.

This is a subject that need pictures along with words. This book was a disappointment because it was very long explanations with not pictures make the explanations clearer.
