Very, very good but not perfect

Let me first state what I liked in this book:

(1.) The book exhaustively covers a very broad range of topics.
(2.) There are many worked example problems.
(3.) And best of all, the worked examples are highly detailed, not simple plug-in equations. These exercises really reinforced my understanding of each subject, and are the best I've ever seen.
(4.) The important machine types are contrasted effectively.

However, all is not perfect. I found the verbal discussions to be often less than illuminating and many of the derivations suffered from magical leaps of intuition. The subject is admittedly deep, but I was hoping that the authors would state things more clearly given their deep understanding of machines. OK, this is a quibble, but it is a distinction I make between being a 4* or 5* book.

You will learn a lot from this book, and really, I have not found a better one on the subject (and I have tried!).

Steve Fotheringham has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Weber State University, A Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling, and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration from The University of Arizona. But the only credentials he claims for this book is that he was an eyewitness. With family and news videos, text messages, emails, Aaron's written stories, journal entries, magazine and news articles, and DVR recordings that cover much of his life, coupled with the fact that Steve and his wife Kaylene were there most of the time, he was able to write an accurate and inspiring biography.

Great Read, Don't miss it.

"So pleasantly surprised! It's been a while since I've read a book with so many levels of interest. I thought it was going to be about a young man dealing with a disability who had big dreams. That's just scratching the surface. This book chronicles the story of an incredible family that have witnessed their adopted son's development into an international WCMX star. Told by the father of the family, we get an inside look into the creation of a new family, the creation of a new sport and the creation of an attitude of living that could benefit us all. Easy to read and hard to put down.

Great Book - You Won't Be Disappointed!

When I picked up this book I knew I was going to learn about an amazing athlete based on the cover! A man in a wheelchair doing a handplant at the skate park…WHAT? And boy did I learn. I learned about perseverance, dedication, attitude, and a desire to do what every other kid Aaron was hanging out was doing. Wheelz has fans around the world which is not surprising at all because of his devotion to a sport that not only inspires others, but pushes everyone’s thinking about a person with disabilities so far out of the box. What I didn’t expect this book to be was a “How to” for parents. How to not hold your child back from the things they want to try, even if it is a bit scary. How to encourage, support and love no matter what! How to fight for what they need. Steve Fotheringham tells stories in a way that makes you smile, laugh, cheer and cry. Being able to watch the video clips that he was referring to because the links were provided in the book was a perfect addition. So well written!

Aaron Fotheringham has done some amazing things. He's successfully landed multiple backflips in competition

As the father of WCMX (or wheelchair motocross, for the uninitiated), Aaron Fotheringham has done some amazing things. He's successfully landed multiple backflips in competition, served as a wheelchair stuntman in movies and TV shows, and toured the world with Nitro Circus and a host of charitable organizations. But it's his attitude that's truly remarkable. When a well-meaning preacher once assured him that he'd be able to walk after he was resurrected, Aaron's immediate response was, "What makes you think I'll want to?" Other kids had to leave their bikes outside as soon as they got to school, but he got to ride his bike everywhere he went.

WHEELZ affords its readers a behind-the-scenes look at Aaron's life and the rise of this bone-crushing sport. It's a one-of-a-kind book about a one-of-a-kind kid who never thought much of the fact that his legs didn't really work, and I highly recommend it.

The Author's Honesty Captivating

As someone who has wrestled with the idea of "the will of God," not only for my life, but for others, Gerald Sittser's book caught my attention. The outstanding feature of this book is the author's honesty about exploring and doing the will of God; an exploration marked by intense pain and heart-searching questions. Sittser keeps the discussion concrete, operating in the day to day world of going to work, raising the kids, grappling with pain, celebrating good times with friends. The chapter on "living in the wonder of the present moment" is some of the best writing out there to bring needed sanity and thoughtful priority to our sometimes hectic lives. Anchoring the will of God to a daily way of life rescues "God's will" from the view that God is playing heavenly hide-and-seek with us. Sittser courageously faces the "why do bad things happen" question and let's the reader ponder it deeply; yet he leads the reader from beyond the "why?" to the "how is God present" question. This is a powerfully thought-provoking book.

You just have to read it, plain and simple!

As an advisee and student of Dr. Sittser's I was naturally drawn to reading this particular book and I am so grateful I did! This particular book should be required reading for everyone! Christians are under emense pressure to discern God's calling and purpose for their lives, but Dr. Sittser has opened the door to following God's will in an exciting and freeing way. God has used this book in my life as I work through what it means to follow God's will. As a college student I have been paralized by the ominous future, but Dr. Sittser has a unique way of pulling everything into perspective and I can feel my fear melting away to a hope for everything wonderful that can be accomplished in the present moment of living in God's will. Please, read this book. Dr. Sittser is an incredibly wise and faithful man of God, he truly lives what he writes. This is one book you should not miss.

We found the book to be extremely helpful in guiding our understanding of God working in our daily lives and encouraging us to continue living for God daily. We learned that God's plan is not some mystery to be solved or some treasure to be found but living daily, seeking God first and following His revealed will in our daily routines. This daily life will prepare us for the future that God has planned for our life. Mr. Sittser truly captured the reality of how to live the will of God by revealing his unique view from the combined perspective of Bible theologian, college professor, father of three and a man living in today's world. We encourage anyone trying to understand the will of God for their life to read this book and seek God's will.

Historian's Handbook: Very helpful for writing

This book not only devotes a chapter to the history of history, but it also outlines why you should study history. It gives good solid background on research, and where to start looking. If you have a paper due on Medieval Europe, this book will tell you where to find materials for Medieval Europe. Not just the library, it will tell you about PRIMARY SOURCES! which is the key to writing History. This book doesn't give too much information on Historians, and other aspects of the profession such as expected income, how to be successful, but it does clue you in as to the research and writing part, which is the biggest part. Great book for students of History, but not for non-majors, it would just serve to confuse and frustrate those not majoring in the subject.

Extremely good for both native and non-native speakers

What a fantastically enlightening and helpful book! As an English educator I must admit I was stunned at how narrow the scope of my knowledge was in this area.....and this book showed me! My ESL students (and secretly myself) have found it absolutely invaluable in decifering the meanings of unknown words from both in and out of context. I found that it made my students think more about the meanings of parts of words rather than looking at the whole word as a memorizable item. They began to process the words more and therefore retention became higher. If you teach ESL or are an educator, you NEED this book.

The great majority of Chinese learners of English tend to find it harder to learn an ever-expanding English vocabulary. Most of them have tried but failed to overcome this difficulty. By teaching them prefixes, suffixesand roots, it will help the learners to better understand the words because it tells how these words are spelled and combined, what they mean, and where they come from.
Also,by teaching English vocabulary learners prefixes, suffixes and roots, learners can integrate easily the concepts and meanings of the words while they split up the combination of the words. Furthermore, they can read the prefixes to assume the basic meanings of the words. On the contrary, they also can associate the ideas of the meanings by reading through the suffixes. With following same set of pattern, learners learn by analogy so as to bear these vocabularies in minds for long and easily. Th successful use of this book with the practice of the exercise will benefit learners step by step. So, as an ESL teacher of vocabulary can choose this book as an reference.

Determining which Saxon level to purchase for 7th grade.

PLEASE READ!! We homeschool two children. Our eldest (12-years old) is currently at the end of her coursework w/the BOB JONES 6TH GRADE MATH program. Since the upcoming 7th grade school year is soon upon us, I decided to go ahead and purchase next year's math program early. Although we've had wonderful success with the Bob Jones 6th grade math curriculum, I wanted to give Saxon a try, because I really like how they break down their explanations into basic terms that my daughter comprehends as an older student. PLUS, Saxon is a bit more affordable than the BJ math programs. That's important too.

Having said that, we looked at the online quiz provided by Saxon to ascertain which level our daughter is at, and ultimately decided to purchase the SAXON MATH 7/6 books. In a nutshell, the 7/6 level is pretty much REVIEW of what BJ's 6th grade math level is. So if your child successfully mastered BJ's 6th grade math, and are thinking of trying out a Saxon program, then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you consider Saxon's 8/7 program, which is the next step up.

Truly wish Saxon would let shoppers look at the "table of contents" of their books prior to purchasing, which would make it easier to select the appropriate product for their child.

Best Math Books on the Market

I'm a tutor and use a lot of different math curriculum. Saxon Math is definitely my favorite. It's clear, complete, and doesn't seem to be riddled with errors like wrong answers, which is a problem with many math texts. Also, I like the dry humor evident in the story problems. This helps keep students engaged and laughing, which is a very good thing.

Very good! Exactly what we were hoping for. Really like the solutions manuel because it not only has the answers but the solutions to get the answers. And the workbook problems have the lesson number at the end of each problem so the student can look back in case they have any question about solving it. Both of these things are wonderful and helps facilitate a self-learner, which we are striving for.

Robert T. Moran is Professor of International Management, Emeritus and Former Interim Chair of the International Studies Department at Thunderbird School of Global Management, USA.

Neil Remington Abramson is Associate Professor of Management, in the Strategy Area Group of the Beedie School of Business, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is the recently elected president of the Simon Fraser Faculty Association (2013--2014), a position he has held in the past (2001--2002). In 1991--1992, he was an assistant professor at the Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ontario, Canada.

Sarah V. Moran has a masters degree in Intercultural Communication from Arizona State University and has successfully completed all required course work at McGill University for a Ph.D. in Management. Following her masters degree, she worked for four years in Asia.

A Practitioner's Guide for Communicating With People and Succeeding in Your Endeavors

After finishing a doctoral program, I realized that I needed a solid business background in order to bridge the gap between my expertise and the business world. Consequently, I enrolled in an MBA program. This book, "Managing Cultural Differences," is the textbook for one of the courses. Although a digital copy was issued to me, I spent the money and purchased a paperback version. (By now, the book is heavily annotated, highlighted in 6 different colors and tabbed for easy access to the main points.)

Already, I am using a few of the concepts from the book. For example, when dealing with people from different cultures, I take a few seconds to assess their communication styles; based on their background and their interaction style I adjust my interaction accordingly. This means that if I am dealing with a person who values friendship, then I take a few extra seconds to talk about his or her family. This is just one of the many things that you will learn from the book.

Moreover, one of the main themes of the book is "Leadership." The book goes beyond the empty phrases, buzzwords, and slogans. For example, the book stresses that building "High Performance teams" requires training, education, and diversity. Because of the book, along with the course, I came up with my own "High Performance Team Equation."

The book is fairly easy to read an comprehend (useful diagrams are provided).

Additionally, the book delivers many of the points through stories. If you are interested in business, then the ability to tell stories is a must. Business schools are focusing more on training students on how to tell stories to deliver the points.

In sum, the book is extremely useful because it focuses on communication skills from a global perspective. It is easy to read, very comprehensive and well laid out; and the stories and examples are very illustrative and full of real-life experiences and though-provoking discussion.

Being an American and then transported and growing up in a different country/culture and then working in the U.S, I found so much that I could relate to in this book both within the corporate environment as well as in my personal interactions. If you have ever had a difficult interaction with someone from another country, it would be a good idea to pick this book up.
It helps one really understand the cultural differences, as the title depicts. It also helps one to verbalize the different terms to explain cultural differences and how to bridge those gaps. The portions related to 'low-context' and 'high-context' communication cultures, for example, detail varying communication styles. This helps in knowing both how to communicate, as well as how to listen within different cultural contexts.
The book also discusses various important facts and 'nuggets of wisdom' on doing business in various regions of the world such as Europe, Africa, Asia, North America e.t.c.
It also helped me understand so many interesting facts about my past as well. I printed out the chapter on Managing Global Transitions and Relocations (Chapter 8) and passed it on to my family members and friends who had similar childhood relocation experiences. It was an eye opener and really helped in verbalizing so many joint experiences in assimilation into different cultures. One of my colleagues also happened to be travelling to a different country at the time I took this course and I was able to pass on so much useful information and give concrete advice. I know I will be using this book for a very long time...
Normally not so effusive but there are so many positives about this book that a review may not suffice. It is definitely worth investing the money in, even just for personal reading and enlightenment. I wish all business people in the world could read this book. I think the world might be a better place.

Great book! R. Moran takes the reader through practical stories that bring to life so many dynamics of crossing and bridging cultures. For those operating internationally, the skills taught in this book are essential to avoid pitfalls and to thrive. It is amazing how the devil is in the details when it comes to cultural differences and when things are missed, little details become elephants in the room that can hinder relationship building and hurt business results. Thanks for the book and the many lessons in it!
