Vocabulary surprise

I don't know if I just didn't read this in the description when I bought the book, but when I opened it up this evening I found-to my surprise-that there is a list in the back of the book with the verbs used in the text. My French skills are sufficient for most things, but I have to admit that the presence of that reference material is comforting.

Other than that, the book arrived in great shape, just as expected.

I love this book!

I've read it twice for two different classes and loved it both times. It's written in a basic enough level of french for most intermediate students to understand, and it reads very quickly as you don't want to put it down! I love Meursault!

Seminal Book on Big Data

A seminal book which takes the reader beyond the fancy term of "Big Data" and clearly elicits how big data can transforms today's enterprises to better serve its customers. The book provides food for thought for readers from different backgrounds. Business leaders and analyst would find Use cases provided in Chapter 3 interesting as it suggests applications for big data in various industries. Architecture patterns in chapter 5 along with modelling and implementation techniques using NoSql, specific solutions like Hadoop, in-memory grids etc would appeal to technologist. Chapter 9 discusses in depth about the skills which needs to be acquired to become a data scientist.

Having worked and consulted in BFSI, I was able to correlate with the specific use cases provided for the financial industry. The book made me rethink how I would have implemented some of the solutions we had developed years back if we had know about these techniques/ technologies.

Introduction to visualization techniques, in chapter 9, highlights when a particular visualization (bar chart, scatter plot etc) can be used.

The book has personally given me a different perspective on how to view / structure our business data. By applying the techniques suggested we might be able to; solve our customer needs better; build simple and more effective solutions.

A long long talk about Big Data opportunities for the non tech savvy.

I did not like the book, I'm honest. And I did not like it for a couple of reasons. First, this book targets those interested in the business aspects of Big Data, and I'm not among them; second, even if I were, I don't really feel that enlighten by this title. It's a big long talk about the opportunities Big Data offers and its implications on the enterprise budget.

It's a big talk.

As the authors suggest, Big Data Imperatives can be broadly divided into three parts:

Part 1, chapters one to three, is a speech about the traditional approaches to data management and their failure to handle Big Data. The discussion then moves to the opportunities and costs it presents to the enterprise. Here the authors provide real use cases, such as retail, insurance and telecommunications.

Chapters four to six included represent instead the second part of the book. Here the focus is to find which technologies better suit the needs of the company. The talk starts with the evolution of databases. Concepts like read/write ratio, consistency and sharding make their appearance. Their impact on data analysis is also explored.

The last chapters of the book, seven to nine, cover the technologies available for developing and implementing Big Data analytics. The discussion is again centered around the inefficiency of RDBMs to satisfy the stakeholders needs. The talk quickly moves to noSQL, Hadoop and Map/Reduce.

The figure of the data scientist is the subject of the last chapter. The magic the business can expect from this divine person is described with exhaustive details.

Finally, a note about the many schemas present in the book. I must admit that the authors dedicated much time to the details of each image in the book. Kudos to their quality. Still, each comes with lots of text. When I say lots I mean they are really overly populated with text, which decreases their added value.

Content is good, but the quality of the printing could be better.

The content strikes a good balance between the business and technical perspective. Unfortunately, the print quality is poor, and don't be fooled by the color graphics in the Amazon preview. When this arrived on the book shelves at the school as a text book (regular, full price), the graphics were B&W and not always clear due to the smaller than usual page size. What gives, Apress? My students were not happy campers.

Kendell H. Easley is professor of Biblical Studies and director of the School of Theology and Missions graduate programs at the Stephen Olford Center at Union University in Memphis, Tennessee.

Steven Cox is the Assistant Professor of New Testament and Greek at the Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Memphis, Tennessee. He earned his Master of Divinity from Erskine Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Cox lives in Germantown, Tennessee.

Right in the beginning is found a 7 page at-a-glance chart, a Scripture Index, of the four Gospels harmonized. The center and bulk of the book are the four Gospels placed in pericopes alongside each other. In addition to the beautiful lay-out, there are a number of theological issues that are discussed in a separate section at the back of the book, such as 'Messianic Prophecies Fulfilled in the Gospels', etc. Full color maps are included as well. This resource is not skimpish, with elaborate materials.

'The use of passages from the OT Psalter as messianic indicators by the four NT evangelists involves ten Psalms of which eight are Davidic according to their superscriptions. Of the two remaining, one is by Asaph (Ps 78), and the other is anonymous (Ps 118). This suggests the high degree of perception on the part of the NT community that David's life served as a type of the future Messiah.' p 342

'According to the four Gospels and their use of fulfillment formulas, the OT foretells or foreshadows the Christ...In only about seven or eight of these twenty-three can it be said that the OT context directly shows intention on the part of the author to speak about the Messiah. Sixteen of these may be said to be typological or other analogical or applicational uses of the OT by the NT authors, while the remaining seven are exegetical and contextual completions of the OT texts as predicted and perceived by the OT author.' p 343

Exciting suspense

This is a spine tingling suspense novel with a mystery that lasts until the very last page. The heroine is a prosecutor and you assume that the bad guy who kidnapped her son is one of the family members of the man she has just put in prison. Although this family is evil and certainly causes a large amount of trouble the true mystery is rooted in the heroine's past and is convoluted and the path to solving the mystery is full of red herrings and is so well done that you don't see the bad guy's identity until the end. The hero in this book is an FBI agent who met the heroine nine months ago and has had a thing for her ever since. He even transferred to a different task force to be closer to her. I love this kind of passion, and I liked both of these characters. They are both old enough that they have experienced life's ups and downs and also quite a bit of tragedy between them. It's a credit to the writer that the chemistry between the characters is hot and passionate despite neither of them being "perfect". I have read every book that this author has written so I enjoy the supporting cast of characters many of whom we have met in previous outings. This is a great book for those who like can't put it down mystery, suspense, thriller type books with just the right amount of sex and passion to keep things interesting.

Did You Miss Me

This is the latest Karen Rose title and already I cant wait for the next one. As usual she writes a complex story with lots of twists & turns. It wasn't until I was 80% through the book that I decided who the killer was and then I wasn't quite right. This story keeps you on the edge of your seat right until the last page. I highly recomend it to any lover of thrillers!

Awesome - mostly

Loved this book, didn't want to put it down - I was actually reading it at work (shhhhh!). I was completely drawn into the suspense of the story, and it was great to see characters from previous books and "catch up". Ms. Rose does a fantastic job of really putting you "there" in the story, so much so that the whole courthouse steps scene had my heart pounding. The mystery was very well done; I truly didn't know whodunnit until the last chapter of the book, and that's rare these days.

I enjoyed Joseph and Daphne, and it was great to see them get together. But... something about their interactions felt a little forced to me. In the previous book Daphne is a total character, with her big hair, bright suits and Southern twang. That Daphne was nowhere in sight in this book - which is kind of understandable, given what she goes through in the 3 days' time this story covers, but it's like her personality was completely different, and we're never treated to the "old" Daphne. The ending was also a little abrupt, I thought.

The character that really kept my attention - and it wasn't even his story! - was Clay Maynard. Man, he had a rough couple of days, and it didn't end with a shiny happy rainbow for him. I'm hoping the next book is his and Stevie's. Stevie, put the poor guy out of his misery already!!

Totally worth the purchase, and I can't wait for the next one!

This little manual does consist of interesting bits of Hawaiian history, but so do all books purporting to be "guides" to the islands. It was billed as a "must read" for newcomers and locals alike. I bought it thinking it contained something new, but it did not. Please refer to the title of this review: ho hum.

A must read for those visting or moving to Maui

Of the various books I have read about Maui, Jill Engledow's is by far the most informative.She paints an excellent picture of the culture and history of Maui. You gain so much insight and understanding of the Island and it's people, she actually puts you there and provides such great insights that I have not found in the texts. Alas. don't leave home with out FIRST reading Maui 101.

Most books about exotic places are written by people who come from afar, do their homework, and go home to write about it. Nothing wrong with that. But an insider picks up the subtleties that others miss. Jill Engledow has lived on Maui most of her adult life and wrote for the Maui News for many years. She covered every aspect of island life and then some. This book is meant for people thinking about moving to Maui or who have just landed with all their earthly posessions looking for a new life. "Maui 101" contains all kinds of useful tips that will make settling on the Valley Isle much easier. Life is different in Hawaii, and it sure helps to have a detailed guide for new residents at your finger tips.

About the Author

Laurence Street has a BSc degree in Zoology from the University of British Columbia, a BC Teaching Certificate from UBC, and a Diploma in Biomedical Engineering Technology from the B.C. Institute of Technology. He has taught at both middle school and community college levels, and worked for almost 30 years as a hospital Biomedical Engineering Technologist. He has three previous books published by CRC Press/Taylor & Francis: A Guide to Patient Care Technology, the first edition of Introduction to Biomedical Engineering Technology, and Clinical Procedures for Medical Technology Specialists.

At the end of each chapter there are questions, discussion, and exercises that can be performed to ensure that you learned the information that was provided.
