More than just how to wage war

Among the other reviews here, there have been some comparisons between this book and the Art of War by Sun Tzu. I'd agree. Both are elegant and detailed instruction manuals on how to prepare yourself for conflict.

Once again, Green brings a tremendous body of research and historical insight to his writing, demonstrating the key points of each chapter through some of the greatest successes and mistakes from history.

But this isn't just a book about war. Greene repeatedly states that many of the strategies and tactics used to harden an individual for conflict (or conflict avoidance) apply equally well to business, politics and negotiation, and the examples come from everywhere from Hollywood to Ancient Rome.

The advantage this book has over the previous two is that his clarification of his strategies is more balanced and consistent. He goes vague less often here.

This book completes nicely Greene's cycle of historical self-improvement books: the first in how to woo others to your way of thinking, the second to deal with power structures, and the third for self-discipline and conflict resolution.

Stragtegies of War that Apply to Business and Life

Robert Greene is a prolific research and thinker who has made a habit out of writing masterpieces that explore all nuances of human behavior. In his latest tome he follows the same approach as in his previous bestsellers by leading off each chapter with a quick and easy to read summary that gives you the essence of the strategy and the stories that follow. Then he leads you on one fascinating historical excursion after another that brings each strategy to life through the exploits of some of histories most famous and notorious characters.

The beauty of his approach is that there is something for everyone in this book. You may read about a tactic that is highly amusing, but that you say to yourself, "I could never do that." Then in the next chapter you may say, "That's fits in with my personality. I can do that." That's how I felt about his strategies for laying back and appearing to not care, and about his strategy for taking an unassailable position.

A brief story in chapter 4 on developing a sense of extreme urgency was well worth the cost of the book to me. It talks about Fyodor Dostoevsky and how a change in his perspective on the value of life lead to a greater appreciation for every moment, and to an era of rampant productivity that continued until his death. Because I'm an author I spend a good part of every day writing and thinking about my work. After reading about Dostoevsky I immediately felt an even higher sense of purpose and motivation.

You really can't go wrong with this book. It is very entertaining and educational. Beyond that, you could pick up some sage, time-tested advice for improving both your business and your life. Bravo!

The Best And Most Current Book On Strategy For Your Business Or Your Life Available

Robert Greene's books are deep and they are for thinkers. If you want a breezy beach read or airplane read, this is not that book.

You'll read this book once, get to the last page and go back to page 1 and start reading again. There are literally hundreds of ideas in this book.

I especially like the way the author has made the book applicable to your life, the business or the battlefield.

As a former soldier, I deeply appreciate the detailed review of war strategies and found the book so compelling, I'm buying copies for all of my friends who are in the military and currently deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

If you only read one business or self improvement book this year, read this one. If you read three, read the author's other two books, The 48 Laws of Power and The Art of Seduction.

How many have met the same fate?

Milton William Cooper: Behold A Pale Horse / 1991

In the late 1980s I attended a lecture by Bill Cooper and never forgot this man because of his passionate intensity that convinced me he was telling the truth as he saw it. There was something so compellingly honest, simple, true heart about this man who felt he had been betrayed by the US Navy, his government and the country he dearly loved. Bill Cooper was murdered. The records will say that he was shot in a quarrel that emerged from his drunken belligerence, but no one in the UFO camp believes this. Cooper was making a lot of noise and he was Navy, with too much legitimacy.

How many have met the same fate? I wonder how many men and women have died keeping the secrets of the military corporate complex regarding the extraterrestrial question. I highly recommend his book "Behold a Pale Horse" to those who have not recently re-read it and to those of you who may have never heard of the courageous Bill Cooper.

Here are a few excerpts:

The revelation of the alien presence and actions…must have come at a great shock. … the public could not be told … this would lead to economic collapse, collapse of the religious structure, and national panic, which could lead to anarchy. Secrecy thus continued. …if the public could not be told, Congress could not be told.

Another major finding was that the aliens were using humans and animals for a source for glandular secretions, enzymes, hormonal secretions, blood plasma and possibly in genetic experiments. The aliens explained these actions as necessary to their survival…their genetic structure had deteriorated … Since our weapons were literally powerless against the aliens, Majesty Twelve decided to continue friendly diplomatic relations…

The events at Fatima…the planet would self-destruct…Most of the life on this planet would suffer horribly and die…the aliens confirmed that this was true…explained that they had created us through genetic manipulation in a laboratory.

The NSA was created to decipher the alien communications … and maintains communications with the Luna base and other secret programs.

Many other patriots who attempted to reveal the alien secret have also been murdered throughout the intervening years. At the present time (1991) over 200 material witnesses or people actually involved with the assassination (of JFK who intended to reveal the alien secret) are dead.

Bill Cooper's Conclusions:

1. The secret power structure may believe by their own ignorance or by divine decree, planet Earth will self-destruct in the near future. These men sincerely believe that they are doing the right thing in their attempt to save the human race. It is terribly ironic that they have been forced to take as their partner an alien race which is itself engaged in a monumental struggle for survival. Many moor; and legal compromises may have been made in this joint effort.

2. We are being manipulated by a joint human/alien power structure which will result in a one-world government and the partial enslavement of the human race.

3. The government has been totally deceived and we are being manipulated by an alien power, which will result in the total enslavement and/or destruction of the human race.

4. If none of the above are true, something else must be happening which is beyond our ability to understand at this moment. We must force disclosure of all the facts, discover the truth and act upon it. The situation in which we find ourselves is due to our own actions or inactions over the last 44 years (now over 60 years). Because it is our own fault, we are the only ones who can change future events. … We must abolish secrecy!

More than you might want to know

This review comes with having only read about 1/3 of the book..... A friend mentioned this book too me, and I'm glad to have purchased it. Having read Sitchin's, and Skiba's works, this fits right in line. Much of the behind the scenes manipulation, I was already aware of, but not the detail. However, it is still an eye opener, and to read how severely society is being played....normally I am a fast reader, this book I can only read a few pages at a time, before having to set it down and take a few days to settle my thoughts. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in having their eyes opened, but be warned, there is A LOT to behold.

About the Author
John received his MFA from Goddard College and his BFA in Ballet from Texas Christian University where he trained under Stephanie McFarlane Rand, Li Chou Cheng of Beijing Ballet and Fernando Bujones of American Ballet Theatre and the Royal Ballet. He has been teaching in New York City and around the country since 2000. His methodology has been taught at the Eastern Michigan University, Kalani Retreat Center in Hawaii, Atmananda Yoga Sequence, Baruch College, CUNY Hostos, CUNY in the Heights, Easton Mountain Retreat Center and every summer at the Ollom Movement Art Summer Program at Smith College. In 2010-2011, John Ollom was chosen as the Artist in Residence at the Eastern Michigan University Dance Department. Since 2002, John has served as the Artistic Director of Ollom Movement Art/Prismatic Productions, Inc. where he has choreographed such works as "The Catalyst", "Love and Longing", "The Journey", "John Ollom's The Journey", "Anatomy of Woman", "Dido and Aeneas", "The Other Species", "Love Stories", "Internal Landscapes", "Man of War", "M.U.D. (Men Under Dirt)", "Kuan Yin's Compassion", "Nemetona", "The Portal", and "Prisoner of My Projection". His choreography and direction can also be seen in the film "Karpos and Kalamos". Diving deep into the Unconscious

This is a beautiful book, just the material object in your hand. It's colorfully illustrated and nicely designed. Some of the pages hold only short poems or aphorisms and it's easy to just riffle through the pages reading here and there, admiring the images of nature, of colorful abstracts, and especially of costumed (and not so costumed) dancers.

Internal Landscapes is a documentation of choreographer John Ollom's art and production. Within the book are descriptions of performances and art festivals. In that sense, it is like his portfolio or an art catalogue or program.

But it is also more than that because Ollom's dance performances are more than just "art." They are also psychological, archetypal experiences and adventures in consciousness. The book opens with a discussion of how John Ollom learned to use movement to elict deep experience in his dance students: Chapter 1 is titled "Psychological and Anthropological Findings." The stories in myth and legend--which often form the "libretto" of music and dance--have become canonized because they capture deep human experience and common patterns in life--as mythical, not logical. They speak to something deeper than the conscious mind. Movement is a way to sidestep logic and awaken the mythic unconscious mind. Dance creates what in other contexts would be called ritual, and like ritual, dance can bring repressed and denied stories to the surface. Movement and dance act as a kind of psychoanalytic trigger for opening the mind. And in performance, the observer is also called to follow the dancer into his or her own deep unconscious. The book's title "Internal Landscapes," of course, alludes to this power to reach into and waken the mind.

The writing style is a little inelegant at times, but this isn't literature or a book about writing. It's a book about the power of art and movement. A clumsy sentence here and there can be forgiven. I liked this book. I especially like John Ollom's intention to move art and dance into the realm of psychological medicine and transcendence. This is dance movement as yoga and contemplation. And beautifully done!

Simply Amazing

This is an excellent book for anyone in the arts, whether it is dance,acting,writing or painting. Once you read this book it becomes your reference book. It will help you excel in any creative work. It is definitely a must have. It is a amazing to say the least. I definitely recommend. It is a must read.

Naked Introspection

This is a wild inspirational journey into the creative process of the author and how he uses his pathos to break through artistically. I refrain from calling John Ollom a choreographer because he is so much more. Seer? Sage? Catalyst? All three? Perhaps. I am not a very introspective person and I shy away from psychobabble yet I could not put this book down. Of course, it did raise questions of self-doubt. I had the privilege of seeing M.U.D. performed live and yet I did not understand some of the imagery or symbolism that he so painstakingly detailed in the book. That of course is my own shortcoming and not a reflection of John’s brilliance. Nevertheless, both the performance and the book made me want to dance, or at least move to my own beat, perhaps even skyclad.
