About the Author

Dr. August E. ("Augie") Grant is J. Rion McKissick Professor of Journalism at the University of South Carolina and Chief Research Analyst for 1World Online. Grant is a technology futurist who specializes in research on new media technologies and consumer behavior. His teaching and research combine the study of traditional and emerging media, with emphases on media management, organizational structure, integrated communication, and consumer behavior. He has been editor of Communication Technology Update and Fundamentals since 1992. Dr. Grant has also been published in virtually every major academic journal in the communication field. His work in media convergence includes founding and serving for five years as Executive Editor of The Convergence Newsletter, chairing twelve national conferences on convergent journalism since 2002, and directing the Newsplex Summer Seminar program to train academics in convergent journalism.

Jennifer H. Meadows is Professor in the Media Arts Option and Chair of the Department of Communication Design at California State University, Chico. She earned her M.A.in Radio, Television and Motion Pictures at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Texas at Austin. As the world becomes more complex so does communication.

The wolf whistle has been replaced by face book. Semaphores replace by telegraph, by phone, by today's "The Twonky (1953)" type iPhone.

It used to be good enough to be literate but without an understanding of today's communications and the underlying technology one might as well be blind and dumb.

This book is a great overview and place to start. Later it makes a great reference to use as you encounter (and you will) the different media not only used at the office but at home and soon every walk of life.

I have to admit that my favorite chapter is the first as it covers the history of communication and I lived through most of that history. However I use the rest of the book before making purchase decisions. I am amazed how well the book keeps up with common communications. Of course that could be because this is the Twelfth edition and the newer information had been crammed into it. If a thirteenth edition come out there will be newer information however this edition will still have all the fundamentals and history will not have changed that much.

It is written for students and has an extensive biographical section. But I find it is useful for anyone that is interested in purchasing or understanding today's communication technology.

I agree with HP, there are no pages and that can make it very difficult with citing from the book. On top of that when I am looking for something I have to guess where the information is. It's confusing and tedious. This kindle version needs to be updated with pages. I don;t know if getting the hard cover for rent would be easier or not.

Expand Your Fred-ness

There really aren't a lot of books that should be on everyone's "must read" list when you consider how varied our interests are. Sure, if you like biographies you simply can't miss Carl Van Doren's 1938 Pulitzer winner on Benjamin Franklin. If great literature is your thing, Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird ranks right up there, and if your desire is to learn how to budget your money, George Classen's The Richest Man In Babylon tops the list, but even these great books would not fit on everyone's "must read" list. Great literature may bore you to death and you may have no desire whatsoever to save money. Of the few books that do belong on everyone's list, the Bible comes to mind. Whether you are a believer in Christ or not, the Bible is simply full of great words to live by. And if you are a citizen of this universe, and I believe most people reading this are, you should add The Fred Factor by Mark Sanborn. It's just one of those rare books that would benefit everyone is some way.

FRED 2.0: New Ideas on How to Keep Delivering Extraordinary Results, is a continuation of The Fred Factor. Here Sanborn expands on Fred-ness and as the subtitle suggests - presents fresh ideas to continue on your Fred journey. The story of Fred Shea the postman has become a staple in business, but being a Fred isn't about just business, it's about everything we do in our lives to help others and this book is chalk full of examples, anecdotes and ideas on how to increase your Fred-ness.

There were many pearls of wisdom I found and I just want to touch on a few. The first one was about employees found in the opening pages when Sanborn writes, "Employees who offer nothing different from other employees are interchangeable." The same philosophy applies to business. If there is nothing unique or extraordinary about your business, you may have loyal customers but they won't be advocates for your business.

Next I found this, "A commitment without a goal is like a trip without a road map; odds are you won't get to where you want to be." How true is this? People often confuse the two and because they feel a strong commitment, they fail to clearly define goals. Then on page 63 I found this gem, "What kind of difference did you make today?" I've made this my new email tagline. If we consistently keep that question in mind, we can't help but make a huge impact on others.

I found this keepsake rule of customer service, "a problem is an opportunity to increase loyalty". We tend to view customer issues as something we have to deal with instead of viewing it an opportunity to build a better relationship with that customer. It's all in how you approach it. This was part of an entire chapter of gems on improving customer service and I'm only scratching the surface here. There's even a chapter of "Freducation" that discusses promoting Fred-ness in schools and other areas of child rearing.

If I have any knock at all on this book it is that you should read The Fred Factor first, but I don't see that as a knock at all. If you haven't read The Fred Factor by now, what are you waiting on? Reading it first will just give the reader a better overall understanding of Fred-ness. In the first book, Sanborn does, I think, a better job of explaining what being a Fred is all about. Don't worry though, I'm sure some marketing genius is already presenting the idea of packaging the two books together.

I ordered Fred 2.0 after reading a review on Michael Hyatt's excellent blog. I started into it, but found that I wanted to read The Fred Factor first.

I loved The Fred Factor, but found Fred 2.0 packed with even more examples of individuals going the extra mile to exceed their customers' needs. Mark Sanborn has hit on something that would turn many failing organizations into great places to work and do business.

About the Author
Dr. Roland A. Carlstedt is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Board Certified Sport Psychologist and Chairman of the American Board of Sport Psychology. He also is the holder of an Applied Psychologist's license. Roland earned his Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Psychology with Honors from Saybrook Graduate School (with emphases in health and sport psychology and psychophysiology) in San Francisco. He has completed post-doctoral continuing education in Psychiatric Neuroscience through Harvard Medical School and received training in the joint Massachusetts General Hospital-Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Harvard Medical School Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging Functional Magnetic Resonance Imagery (fMRI) Visiting Fellowship program. Roland is also a Research Fellow in Applied Neuroscience with the Brain Resource Company. Roland's dissertation on neuropsychological, personality and performance processes in highly skilled athletes (700) from 7 sports (tennis, baseball, softball, basketball, golf, volleyball, and track and field) was the recipient of the American Psychological Association's Division 47 (Exercise and Sport Psychology) 2001 Award for Best Dissertation in Sport Psychology. A Deeper Understanding of Low-Intensity Conflict and the War on Terror

It’s not possible to make sense of the War on Terror and other so-called low intensity conflicts going on around the world without the analysis given in "New and Old Wars". It provides two key insights. First, the primary participants in these conflicts, with the exception of the Western powers, do not involve nation-states, and so the types of military and political resolution that the people of the USA are accustomed to are not possible, and second, civilians are the primary and intended victims and casualties of the fighting; civilian casualties are not just an unfortunate or collateral by-product. They can be combatants as well as victims: at what point does a jihadi sympathizer change from being an “innocent” civilian to a terrorist? Clearly, the current media treatment of “civilian” casualties needs refinement. The current non-differentiated approach is not especially helpful.

Insight into the ends, if they can be called that, of these conflicts is also clarified as essentially the exercise of power, or at least the attempt to, by those marginalized from the technologically advanced, capitalistic, liberal democracy global mainstream on the basis of ethnicity or religion. This can explain a lot, the role of terrorism and atrocity, for example, and carries the implication that a war may not the means to a political end, but rather the end in itself.

A question that the book leaves open is whether identity-based conflict and the resulting ethnic cleansing can be reversed once it is established. If not, Iraq and Syria as they were heretofore known are not recoverable.

"New and Old Wars" contains unsettling implications for the USA. Policy makers of both the left and right don’t seem to be able to grasp that they are not dealing with nation-states in these conflicts, with the result that the military and political approaches to them are in most cases exercises in futility. Another is whether it is possible that the growing disparity in wealth will create an environment in which “new wars” are endemic, and a constant supply of marginalized youth to fight them.

The ONLY bad thing about the book is that everything she is warning about is already on its way to being true and there is no sign anyone in the wealthy countries understands, or cares. But I am very glad I read this book. For one thing, it gives a very solid basic understanding of the Bosinian War.

The authoritative edition, although English translation is weak.

The text on the back cover reads: "Barenreiter-Urtext is the seal of quality assigned only to scholarly-critical editions. It guarantees that the musical text reflects the current state of research, prepared in accordance with clearly defined editorial guidelines. Barenreiter Urtext: the last word in authentic text -- the musician's choice."

I have sung from many Barenreiter editions of major works, and can agree with this statement. Although I am just a chorister, and not a musicologist, we have never found a mistake in any Barenreiter edition we have sung from.

Having said that, the English translation provided is weak. It is done by Henry S. Drinker, Lawyer, President of Lehigh University, and noted musicologist. However, I would say that the translation is inferior in a number of places. Compare one chorale from the St. John: O grosse Lieb / O Lieb ohn alle Masse / die dich gebracht auf diese Marterstrasse! / Ich lebte mit der Welt in Lust und Freuden / und du musst Leiden!

Drinker translates this: O wondrous love / O love all love excelling / wherefore Thou made this vale of tears Thy dwelling! / The joys and pleasures of the world we cherish / Yet Thou must perish.

Compare to the translation of the great Catherine Winkworth, premier 19th C translator of German hymns into English: O wondrous love / whose depth no heart hath sounded / That brought Thee here, by foes and thieves surrounded! / All worldly pleasures, heedless, I was trying / While Thou wert dying.

The Winkworth translation seems to me both more personal ('I' rather than 'we') and more direct ('that brought' vs. 'wherefore'). 'Marterstrasse' is not directly translated in either, but 'made this vale of tears Thy dwelling' seems to refer to the Incarnation as a whole, rather than the Passion ('..here, by foes and thieves surrounded.')

This is just one example of many where I think that the English translation in the Barenreiter is lacking.

We are all so busy trying to make the most out of each and everyday that it goes without saying that we miss out on so much in the process.

In the book EXPAND THIS MOMENT, author John Selby invites us to stop and take a moment to enjoy the greatness that is life, the right now. I found this to be a timely read seeing that I am guilty of trying to cram as much as I can within one 24 hour period. Though that is not going to stop overnight, it is important for us to realize the importance of the moment and not take it for granted.

Through messages and meditations that have been shown to work, the author reminds us to think of what is truly important and not allow the anxiety of tomorrow stop us from actually living and enjoying the thing we call life.

Written in a manner that is sure to encourage and inspire, EXPAND THIS MOMENT is just what a growing world needs to make sense of who we are and what is important.

Perhaps the most valuable meditation-related title I've ever read

Over the years I've read a lot about books that address meditation, but this title features the best and most practical discussion about that subject I've ever come across. There's also a lot of really great life advice in this work, plus the author's conversational, down-to-earth writing style is very engaging. Mr. Selby clearly comes across as a very authentic spiritual teacher whose heart is obviously in a very loving space. As such, I highly recommend "Expand This Moment" as a spiritual growth resource.

thought I knew it all

I have learned dozens of methods of meditations, simple to the very complex and always find the problem is getting into a routine of actuallly doing the meditation so it's a habit.
This book starts off like "nothing new" then, about page 46 I realize, "Wow". This is simple, makes sense and doable. I agree with his technique and philosophy backing it up.
Try it.

Chase adds an important element to our understanding of the infamous Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski. Part of what made Kaczynski an iconic figure after his arrest in 1996 for 16 mail bombings (resulting in three deaths) between 1978 and 1995 was his unusual background as a highly gifted, Harvard-educated mathematician. While the media found comfort in writing him off as a mental case, more remarkable was how seemingly typical Kaczynski was. Bucking the conventional wisdom, Chase (In a Dark Wood) identifies Kaczynski as a victim more of the anxious and contradictory Cold War 1950s than of the incendiary 1960s. With a background strikingly similar to Kaczynski's-including both a Harvard degree and self-imposed exile in Montana-Chase is in a unique position to probe the underlying tensions that led Kaczynski to commit dispassionate murder in the name of ideals. Chase persuasively isolates the turning point in his subject's years at Harvard, "where lasting human relations are more rare than championship football teams." In Cambridge he faced the typical Harvard pressures but, more importantly, was a subject of three years' worth of what many will agree were wildly irresponsible psychological experiments led by maverick psychology pioneer Henry A. Murray. While the conclusions Chase draws are unimpeachable, his description of the fateful experiments feels truncated, no doubt because some records remain sealed. Chase's disenchanted indictment of academia (represented here by Harvard) as lackey to the military-industrial complex is all the more compelling for the author's unruffled sense of perspective. Chase, who, like Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski, graduated from Harvard and fled academe for the Montana wilderness, here offers a new slant on the triple murderer and doctor of philosophy. According to the author, the philosophical roots of Kaczynski's anti-industrialism began with Harvard's curriculum in the late 1950s. Chase writes that it cultivated the view, later to be called cultural or moral relativism, that democratic society and its institutions were sheer power relations and bereft of intrinsic value. Chase then sets forth the etymology, so to speak, of the killer's more particular thoughts, concluding that Kaczynski was a cherry picker among quite old and common execrations of technology. Tying in the killer's personal rages, Chase suggests that social awkwardness and participation in a traumatizing psychological experiment (led by the unorthodox psychologist Henry A. Murray) underlay Kaczynski's exaltation in planning and "justifying" his crimes. It takes an intellectual to think like that, and Chase astutely and provocatively delineates Kaczynski's metamorphosis into a Raskolnikov. Gilbert Taylor

No doubt about it: Alston Chase can write well enough
to keep my attention, but he cannot argue a point well
enough to convince me. Despite his philosophical training,
Chase cannot distinguish himself from his object:
The Unabomber.
According to Chase, a Harvard education helps explain
the disaffection and alienation that led Ted Kaczynski
to his homicidal endeavors. In particular, Chase blames
Kaczynski's participation inn the murky experiments of Harvard psychologist Henry A. Murray.
But there are large gaps in Chase's theory. First, Chase
does cannot seem to find a single statement where Kaczynski expresses any hostility toward Harvard. This is significant insofar as Chase otherwise does allude to the Unabomber's journal entries.
One indication of motivation that Chase does provide (p. 342) is in the following quote from Kaczynski: "My ambition is to kill a scientist, big businessman, government official, or the like. I would also like to kill a communist."
Nothing here about killing Henry Murray. And nothing here about hating Harvard.
We know that Kaczynski targeted Berkeley, where he had worked. He sent a bomb to the University of Michigan, where he received his Ph.D. He even sent a bomb to Yale. But no, not even one to Harvard. It looks as if the Unabomber went out of his way to avoid harming Harvard.
Indeed, most of the time, we hear about Chase's discontent with his Harvard education. In a review in the Washington Post (March 2, 2003), Todd Gitlin notes how much Chase has injected his own Harvard experience into Kaczynski's life. Despite Chase's protestations to this review, Gitlin documents the fact that Chase wrongly assumed that his 1953 syllabus for a class had the same readings as the one Kaczyski followed later.
About fifteen year ago I read an essay by Alston Chase in BYU Today (August 1985). That piece is a succinct version of his book on the Unabomber, but without the Unabomber. One finds in that article lamentations about the moral relativism and alienating nature of modern civilization. And we find Chase's prescription for our malaise: Appeal to the "rightful province of faith" and a more serious consideration of teleology.
Of course, Chase ignores the fact that faith and teleology are largely responsible for the moral chaos of modern civilization. In any event, Chase apparently has now found the embodiment of alienation in Ted Kaczynski.
Yet, all is not lost for Chase's book, which manages to provide interesting musings on some intellectual trends of the post-War era.
But to the extent that he tries to be more specific about the Harvard connections, Chase fails. The book is more about Chase than about Kacyzynski's problems with Harvard. Accordingly, the book should best be titled: "Harvard and Alston Chase."

Indeed, there at least two gaping holes in Chase's thesis that
Ted Kaczynski's experience at Harvard was partly responsible
for the homicidal genius known as the Unabomber. In particular,
Chase places some responsibility on the murky experiments conducted by Harvard psychology professor Henry A. Murray. Kaczynski was apparently one of Murray's subjects.
The first gaping hole is that there is not a single statement from Kaczynski
that shows any animosity or ill effects from Murray's experiments or from the Harvard experience. This is expected given Chase's frequent citation of some of the Unabomber's journal entries.
And when Chase does include a quote to enlighten us on the Unabomber's motivations, he selects one where Kaczynski says (p. 342): "My ambition is to kill a scientist, big businessman, government official or the like." Nothing here about Murray; and more significantly,nothing here about hating Harvard.
The second, and more glaring, lacuna in Chase's thesis is that the Unabomber never targeted Harvard as far as we know. We know that Kaczynski targeted Berkeley, where he had worked. He sent a bomb to the University of Michigan, where he received his Ph.D. He even sent a bomb to Yale. But no, not even one to Harvard. It looks as if the Unabomber went out of his way to avoid harming Harvard.
