This latest addition in the Historical American Biographies series is a well-written and balanced biography of a poor Scottish immigrant who came to America at the age of 13 and immediately began work in a cotton mill and bobbin factory with his father. A small, energetic, honest worker, he seized opportunities to forward his career. At age 15 he began as a telegraph operator, then worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and finally formed Carnegie Steel, the largest steel company in the world. At age 20, following the death of his father, Carnegie became the sole supporter of his family. Kent (The Civil War, 1997, etc.) details how Carnegie's real interest later in life became the ``business of giving''; he believed that ``the man who dies . . . rich dies disgraced.'' Librarians know his story well, but students will be astonished by the amount of money he gave and the number of libraries he built. Well-researched and often illuminating. Kaufman Did Have Zodiac Killer HOOD!

Professor Dewhurst: TY for finally coming out with the book and pictures not seen on internet! You prove Kaufman did have the Zodiac Berryessa Hood by the Pi measurements and the cross stitch pattern Zodiac attempts to display 11/9/69 with X and spatial dots in the slightly imperfect circle describing the measurements. In one of the Zodiac letters, he mentions about inches along the radian. In other words how did the Tarrance & Kaufman family know the size of the cross/circle shape and the type of stitch pattern used by Zodiac? As per your book- "the diameter of the circle was what I thought it would be: about 6.28 inches. The diameter was that of the circle which would be inscribed by a protractor set to a 3.14 inch radius. A radius of Pi." It has been a long journey and despite all the ups and downs, would do it all over again because, like you, Dennis, Nanette Barto, and so many who have struggled with the reality Jack may be Zodiac....we know the truth when we see experience it all. I was given permission by Dennis Kaufman to work on the Jacks codes last year and to remember you had the biographical rights when compiling my book coincidentally out now. Please, Professor, let's work together as I got Jack's keys to his codes as shown to me by Dennis....long story but in Jack's own words, his own way, in code, he tells all on the CIA, MkUltra which was operating illegally there in San Francisco. Lastly, thank you for sharing Nanette Barto's work in such a positive light. Dennis, when he lived with me and most of us from the earlier days were not talking (thx to disinformationalists wishing to crush & bury us), he said that should books come out on Jack, Nanette is to be given ultimate positive respect for her role because no one could have got as far as he did or even anyone us has without her dedicated accomplishment of nailing the handwriting which did air of True Crime With Aphrodite Jones in the end saying 'according to FBI, handwriting is a match' TY again Professor Dewhurst! Maria Hayes is a natural products chemist based at the Teagasc Food Research Centre, in Dublin, Ireland.
